Collage of Paine students learning about story elements

As part of the Open Court Reading Program, Paine kindergarteners learned about story elements including characters, setting, plot, and theme. Fairy tales are often used to introduce these elements to young students and to promote early literacy. Teachers practice sequencing, retelling, comparing and contrasting stories as well as characters among the different stories. Special guests visited a group of these students this week, and Lenox even helped them complete a comparing and contrasting lesson!

Based on the collaborative efforts of kindergarten teachers, Landry Pate, Rebecca Waylander, Lela Hartsfield, and Ashley Sing, Magnolia kindergarteners participated in their annual week-long Handwriting Boot Camp. During each day of the Boot Camp, students became certified in the following skills: coloring completely in the lines and choosing appropriate colors, correctly holding and using scissors and glue, practicing strokes necessary for accurately writing letters, gripping a pencil correctly, and writing their first names using proper letter formation and capitalization. On the final day of Handwriting Boot Camp, a Handwriting Parade throughout the school was held to celebrate the kindergarten students' hard work. During this parade, all students and faculty congratulated the students with cheers, applause, and posters
