Botswana is 231,800 sq miles long. It's climate is semi dry because of the short rain season. Because of the high altitude and its location it has a subtropical climate. The dry season lasts from April to October in the south and April to November in the north. It has cool winds in the winter and has hot summers. It has sunshine all year and is windy and dusty when it is dry. Diamonds, copper, nickel, salt soda ash, coal, iron ore, and silver are natural resources found in Botswana. The Okavango delta, Kalahari Desert, the Makgadikgadi Pans, Monalanong Hills, Limpopo river, tati river, Gaborone, Molepolole, Ghanzi, Maun, and Fransistown are in Botswana.

Desertification is effecting Botswana. An increase in temperature is leading to climate change. Botswana gets seasonal rainfall, but now they will get less rainfall. The increase of dry land is decreasing the evaporation. It is reducing the rainfall. There water in the villages are scarce. It is affecting the agriculture. The soil is less usable. It is harder for the plants to grow. There is also a loss of food since it is hard to grow plants.


1966 - Independence from great Britain.

1977 - Botswana Defense force is established.

1979 - President Sir Seretse Khama is reelected as president.

1980 - A member of Southern African Development Coordination.

1985 - South African Army raids buildings in Gaborone and 12 people are killed.


The main ethnic groups for Botswana is Tswana, Kalanga, and Basarwa. The official laungage is English. They also speak Tswana. On January first they have New Year's. In March or April the have Good Friday and Easter Monday. On May First they have Labor Day. In May or June they have Ascension Day. On July 1st they have Sir Seretse Khama Day. On July 3rd they have Presidents Day. On Setember 30th they have Botswana Day. On December 25 they have Christmas Day. Lastly on December 26th they have Boxing Day. 70% of Botswana's citizens are Christian. There are also Muslims, Hindus, and Bahá'í.

Botswana has a parliamentary Republic. The president of Botswana is the head of state and government. The government helps the executive branch. The legislative branch is secured by the government and the Parliament of Botswana. The judicial branch is independent. The president is Ian Khama. The political parties are Botswana Democratic Party, Botswana National Front, Botswana Congress Party, Botswana Alliance Movement, Botswana Movement for Democracy, Botswana People Party, and New democratic Front.


Botswana has an open market. Botswana's currency is Pula. People work in agriculture and hunting, and mining. Botswana has a lot of mining industries. Botswana's exports are diamonds, copper, nickel, soda ash, meat, and textiles. Botswana's imports are foodstuff, machinery, electrical goods, transport equipment, textiles, petroleum products, wood and paper products, and metal products.
