Chesterton Middle School to present two, one-act comedies this Friday and Saturday
This year, 60 of Chesterton Middle School's best thespians are coming together to produce two, one-act comedy plays. Performances will be at 6:00 p.m. on both Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9. Tickets are $4 for students and seniors, and $6 for adults and will be available at the door. The show is being co-directed by teachers Elizabeth Graupner and Jodie Boy.
The first one-act comedy, This is Your Brain on Social Media, explores the hilarious dangers of teens over-indulging in technology. Inspired by real interviews with teenagers about their online lives, this one-act show takes on both the social-media madness facing modern day kids, and the grown-up hysteria over "kids these days." Starring Abby Ailes, Bella Brack, Mena Brack, Nathaniel Carpentier, Grace Carpenter, Marie Dandinidis, Laela Dinkins, Thomas Fadell, Emily Fleschhacker, Lauren Frencl, Jadelynn Girouard, Maxwell Good, Alex Hanna, Gigi Hanner, Lucy Huffman, Hailey Jalovecky, Tori Johnson, Ira Kashyap, Hayden Kremke, August Lovitz, Meghan Mahan, Kelsey Mason, Jacob Norkus, Shea Ogle, Sydney Orsburn, Milyani Ortiz, Josey Parlock, Saffy Shrum, Linnea Sundquist, Taylor Wise, and Sophia Worden.
The second one-act comedy, 10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse provides audience members strategies to survive the end of the world! This handy and hilarious guide covers using everything from Kung-Fu to logical reasoning to fend off hordes of the undead. Starring Katelynn Asbury, Abby Atrosh, Katie Billings, Ian Burgos, Connor Caton, Piotr Chmura, Ava Christian, Abigail Dennington, Grace Dudy, Thomas Fadell, CJ Glover, Josh Hoover, Ayla Johnson, Connor Kintzel, Tanner Lipka, LJ Manta, Arianna Martin, Emerson McCready, Brianna Moehl, Emily Nittner, Paige Nittner, Abby Norkus, Ally Novreske, Cadence Orange, Kaitlyn Piskula, Katie Radliff, Owen Rutherford, Keven Schmitt, Conner Smenyak, and Walter Smith.

Duneland School Corporation to host series of Public Meetings
Planning for the Next 50 Years of Serving Our Community and Students
The Duneland School Corporation will host a series of meetings for the purpose of sharing information about the District with the public. Duneland School Corporation representatives will be present to offer general information on the state of our schools as well as answer questions that the public might have regarding the proposed referendum.
On February 4, 2019, the locally elected Duneland School Corporation Board passed a resolution establishing that the Corporation will pursue a referendum that would, if passed by the voters residing in the Corporation, allow for a continuance of the referendum tax rate not to exceed $0.22.

Two Duneland School students are semifinalists in 2019 GeoBee Indiana State Competition
Two Duneland School students are are semifinalists in the 2019 National Geographic GeoBee Indiana State Competition. Michael Shumate, sixth grader at Westchester Intermediate School and Riley Hawksworth, eighth grader at Chesterton Middle School.
Shumate and Hawksworth, were each notified by the National Geographic Society that they are semifinalists who eligible to compete in the 2019 National Geographic GeoBee Indiana State Competition. The contest will be held at the IUPUI campus on Friday, March 29, 2019.
Japanese Speech Contest Finalists
Chesterton High School seniors, above, left to right, Bella Nash, Jon Sumita, and Anna Parkinson have been chosen through a preliminary selection process to be speech finalists at the 33rd Annual Japanese Language Speech Contest on Saturday, March 23 at the Japan Information Center (JIC) at the Consulate in Chicago. All three are from the Japanese 5 and 5 International Baccalaureate (IB) class. Their teacher is Aki Tsugawa. The JIC has been hosting this contest to promote the study of the Japanese language in the Midwest and to deepen the mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and the United States.
Celebrating '50' Years: Film documentary highlights the formation of the Duneland School Corporation
Join the Duneland Historical Society in a viewing of a documentary film made for the 50th anniversary of the Duneland School Corporation (DSC) on Thursday, March 21 at 7 p.m. at the Westchester Public Library Baugher Center, 100 W. Indiana Ave., Chesterton.
Tom Smith, community and 50th Anniversary committee member, spearheaded this project with the help of co-committee member Michele Stipanovich and Chesterton High School teacher Matthew Waters. The film features interviews with many former DSC teachers, staff, and others involved in the formation and early years of the corporation including Bertha Still, Pat Mitchell, Jim Ross, Tom Smith, Dan Keilman, Jim Ton, and more.
All Duneland Historical Society monthly programs are open free of charge to the public. Memberships are available at the time of this program. Call 219-983-9715 for more information.

New CHS Alumni Association now accepting memberships
Duneland School Corporation (DSC) officials and Chesterton High School alumni have announced a newly established official Chesterton High School Alumni Association to be a fully-integrated, volunteer-led alumni association.
This association will work to advance DSC by building a strong community of alumni, both current and future, through programs, services and communications and by providing alumni with positive, lifelong, and meaningful engagement and volunteer opportunities wherever they may live and work. This alumni association will support the Duneland Schools and its goals, and strengthen the ties between alumni of Chesterton High School and all former township schools (Jackson, Liberty, Westchester and parts of Pine Township) that make-up the Duneland School District, and the community. April 3 eLearning Day cancelled: Duneland School officials have decided to eliminate the Wednesday, April 3, 2019 eLearning day from the 2018-2019 school calendar. This decision means that students will now attend school on Wednesday, April 3rd and will not stay home for an elearning day. Read the whole story here.

The Duneland Exchange Club will host the 28th ANNUAL YOUTH TALENT SHOWCASE on Saturday, April 13 at 6 p.m. at the Chesterton High School Auditorium to benefit the Natural Helper Program at CHS.
Duneland School students in grades K-12 are eligible to participate. There are three divisions: Primary - grades K-4, Junior - grades 5-8, and Senior - grades 9-12. There is a mandatory dress rehearsal on Friday, April 12.
Everyone is required to audition prior to the show. Auditions will be held at Chesterton Middle School on either Tuesday, March 19 OR Thursday, March 20. Send in your applications early for preferred audition times. Applications will be available at all Duneland School Main Offices and should be turned in no later than March 12. CHS Cheer Tryouts: Chesterton High School co-ed male & female cheerleading team tryout dates for the 2019 – 2020 school year will be as follows:
- A CHS Cheer Parent/Callout Meeting: This MANDATORY meeting for parents will be hosted on Monday, April 1, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. in the CHS Cafeteria (enter through Door 31).
- A CHS Cheer Clinic will be hosted on April 15-17, 2019 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in the CHS Field House. This clinic is MANDATORY in order to attend Tryouts.
- CHS Cheer Tryouts will be on Friday, April 18, 2019 at 3:30 p.m. in the CHS Field House. There is NO set end time.
