Lunch & Learn with Rabbi Baum
Is Jewish law compatible with American Democracy?
Join us for a facilitated study session and discussion, led by Rabbi David Baum
TOPIC THIS MONTH:
Are traditional Judaism and Halachah/Jewish law compatible with American Democracy? As we approach the 2018 mid-term election, we will study and discuss this core issue which includes:
- Does Judaism believe in the separation of Church and State?
- Is voting in a democracy a mitvah/obligation?
- What exactly can Judaism teach us about the ethics of living in a democratic society?
About This Series:
For thousands of years, Jews have asked their rabbis and communities questions. These questions have spurred some of our greatest innovations and have contributed to our flourishing throughout history. In our online group, we ask that members of the Congregation Shaarei Kodesh community ask questions - mainly, questions that Siri and Alexa cannot answer. The questions we ask will spur people to give their own answers, but even more than
that, it will compel us to ask more questions. What are we really asking when we ask this question? What is underlying in the question? After a couple of weeks, Rabbi Baum will offer his rabbinic take on one question or theme discussed online in an engaging and meaningful text-based discussion on Shabbat morning.
Cost: $12 per adult, Kids 6-12 $5 each, Kids 5 and under free
