Ms. Ashmore's Class - February 26, 2021
This Week in Kindergarten...
American Symbols is our newest social studies unit. We began by learning that a symbol is something that stands for something else. There are symbols all around us, including street signs, restroom signs, and symbols for holidays like hearts for Valentine's Day and shamrocks for St. Patrick's Day. The American Symbols we will be focusing on are the American Flag, White House, Bald Eagle, Statue of Liberty, Liberty Bell, and the Pledge of Allegiance. We read several books about the flag and The Pledge of Allegiance and learned that the colors on the flag stand for courage, goodness, and justice. We also read about how the 50 stars represent the 50 states and that the Pledge is a promise to be a good citizen of the USA and to respect the flag.
A major focus during this unit is to read informational texts with the goal of answering questions and gathering facts. Each time we look at an America symbol, we will work together to fill in a page with important details. Today, we learned more about the majestic bald eagle. In addition to reading for information, we looked at several eagle cams to view them live. We even got to see a mother eagle feeding her chick!
Although we do say the Pledge of Allegiance each morning, we have been practicing a little extra lately. In your homework this week you will see that your child needs to practice saying the Pledge with a loud and clear voice, while showing great posture and respect. Next Thursday, each child will stand and say the pledge aloud for our class.
Read Across America Week is coming! In honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday, we will celebrate our love of reading all week. There are specific dress-up days (listed below) as well as some exciting activities and experiences planned. The dress-up days are optional, of course, and students are welcome to wear uniforms instead. Please make sure kids still have shoes and coats and are prepared for the weather. Students may also bring a favorite Dr. Seuss book (please label with child's name) to share if you like. It is sure to be a week full of reading and fun!
