College Application Night
Thinking about applying or definitely planning to apply to college? On September 11th at 6:30 p.m in the EHS auditorium, 12th grade students and their parents or guardians should plan to attend a meeting explaining the college application process, including instruction on using Naviance and other important pieces of information regarding college. If you are unsure about attending college you should still plan to attend this meeting so you'll know what to do if you decide to apply. Prior to this meeting it may be helpful for you to check out the Common Application and log onto your Naviance account to re-familiarize yourself with the site. You will use Naviance to request materials for your college application. If you do not attend this meeting you will miss vital information regarding the college application process.
See Your School Counselor
12th grade students, please schedule a meeting with your school counselor to discuss your plans after high school whether your plans include college, full-time work, the military, or a gap year. Please schedule your meeting for a date after the College Application Night. If you plan to apply to college and you know you have an early deadline in October or November please make an appointment to meet with your counselor before September 28th. Your school counselor will go over information with you that will help expedite your transcript release process. Important: Please follow the 3-week request deadline for transcripts and recommendations! Come to the Sept. 12th evening meeting to learn more. We look forward to working with you this year!
College Visits to Essex High School
Throughout the fall, college admissions representatives will visit Essex High School to meet with students. The visiting "rep" is frequently the person who will review your application, so the visit is an opportunity for you to make a good first impression with your engagement and participation during the meeting. Introduce yourself with confidence and a firm handshake, come prepared with a few questions about their programs, and show them how interested you are in their college. Check out Naviance for a list of visiting colleges. If you would like to attend a college visit, see Ms. Cunningham-Firkey in the School Counseling Office for a purple pass.
Event Information
College Fair
Saint Michael's College will host the NEACAC annual college fair in the Tarrant Recreation Center. This fair has over 150 colleges represented! See the list of NEACAC 2018 fair participants and go with a plan of whom you would like to speak with. As with the on-site EHS college visits, these folks are probably the admissions reps who will review your application, so Introduce yourself with confidence and a firm handshake, come prepared with a few questions about their programs, and show them how interested you are in their college. Colleges will ask you for your contact information. To avoid writing it all out many times, consider bringing labels with your name, address, phone number and email address.

How Can Parents and Guardians Help With College Applications?
As a parent or guardian you want to help your college-bound student with their application process but you also want to be careful not to take over a process that is ultimately the college-bound student's. It is sometimes tricky to find that balance of what is a good amount of help and what is too much. Check out this article on ways to help your student through the college application process.
