Creating Hope Through Action
This year’s theme is “Creating Hope Through Action.” Let’s work together to prevent suicide through active awareness, consultation, and support.
Know The Signs
Pain isn’t always obvious, but most people who are thinking about suicide show some signs of it through their conversations, or actions. If you observe one or more of these warning signs, especially if the behavior is new, has increased, is connected to a recent loss or stressor, step in and speak up.
Warning Signs: Withdrawal, loss of interest, sudden neglect of personal appearance, substance abuse, sudden mood changes, personality change, reckless behaviors, feeling hopeless, desperate, trapped, with no sense of purpose, and giving away belongings. Notice if these signs are accompanied by suicidal ideation, intent, and plan for self-harm, reach the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline immediately at 1-800-273-8255 to ask for help.
Find The Words
Before starting the conversation, be prepared with a list of resources on hand. Plan what you will say and intend to have this conversation in a calm manner, and without being in a hurry. Listen to the reasons the person has for living and dying. Validate their emotions, and express concern. Ask if the person has access to lethal means (weapons, medications, etc.) and remove them from their vicinity. Reassure the person of concern by getting them the help, ensuring that there is a safety plan in place. Share with them the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-8255. If you feel that the situation is critical, take the person to the nearest psychiatric clinic or call 911.
