Face Masks Required Starting Nov. 9 Starting Monday, Nov. 9, all WDMCS students and employees will be required to wear a face mask (not gaiter or face shield). This change, which originally was planned for second semester, was moved up in response to the increasing COVID-19 percentages in Polk County. The additional 2020-21 professional development days allow teachers to focus on district initiatives during the teacher contract without requiring substitutes. Administrators will work to protect at least half of each day on Feb. 8 and April 2 and all day on March 11 for teacher work time. Winter break, spring break, the last day of school, and semester and trimester dates will not change. |

- Families must choose for their student to learn at school or online for the rest of the 2020-21 school year.
- Families were sent a survey Monday, Nov. 2, to complete for EACH student.
- Families must decide by Friday, Nov. 13.

Enroll in WDMCS Kindergarten for 2021-22!
If you or someone you know has a child who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 15, 2021, it’s time to enroll for fall kindergarten. Online enrollment opened Nov. 1.

Microsoft Skills Initiative During Pandemic Microsoft is launching an initiative to help 25 million people worldwide acquire digital skills needed in a COVID-19 economy. According to a recent Microsoft blog post, Microsoft, LinkedIn, and GitHub are collaborating to learn about the most in-demand jobs, offer learning and certifications, and equip job seekers with tools to help them get hired. This initiative can help our own WDMCS families and high school students seeking support with finding or changing jobs during the pandemic. | Student Planning Pointers for Parents (SP3) Parents who are interested in receiving timely, grade-level information to help students plan for life after high school can sign up for Iowa Student Loan's program called Student Planning Pointers for Parents (SP3). By participating in the program, parents are signed up to win college savings plan deposits. | Local Food Pantry Services Clive Community Services offers pre-sack service in their parking lot Mondays from 4-7 p.m. and Fridays, 9 a.m. to noon.

- Stay in your car and a volunteer will come to you.
- The pantry is open to all in need.
- There are no residency or income requirements.

Valley’s Craig Walter Named Best of the West Teacher
West Des Moines Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Katherine Harrington, as well as Valley Principal David Maxwell and associate principals Jeff Grassmeyer, Ph.D., and Josh Griffith, revealed the news to Walter on Monday in a surprise visit to his classroom.
“We are so proud of Mr. Walter and this honorable accomplishment,” Maxwell said. “Mr. Walter represents Valley High School’s talented and intelligent teachers extremely well, and we cannot think of another teacher more deserving.”
The WDMCS online COVID-19 dashboard is updated by noon each weekday with the PREVIOUS day’s data. (Tuesday updates will include Saturday, Sunday, and Monday data.)
