In English Language Arts, we just finished our unit on Peace and Conflict. We have finished reading a book called Broken Circle. During the novel study, we had to do literature circles for each chapter.
In Math we have recently finished our unit on Order of Operations (BEDMAS). We know you have to follow the correct order (Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction) to be able to get the right answer to a question.
In Social Studies we are learning about how people impact land and how the land impacts people. We had to create our own countries and everyone enjoyed the project.
In Science we are learning about electricity and the different types of circuits. This unit is very fun because we get to do lots of experiments and hands on learning.
In our other subject areas we are working on the following:
PHYS. ED - We just finished badminton (which everyone loved) and we’re now playing soccer.
HEALTH- We are learning about advertisements and how the media can motivate people to buy their products, even if they’re bad products.
CAREER ED- At the moment, we are filling out resumes for the future.
DIGITAL LITERACY- We were learning about scams and identity theft.
MUSIC- We have finished playing the xylophones, and now we are playing the African drums. Also, we are learning how to do the cup song!
ART- A while ago, we made caricatures of famous people, we also just made some clay spirit animals.
ARTS ED- We are leaning about how dance can express feelings.
BAND- We are playing some cool songs like Celtic Air and Dance and Blue Orchid.

From O.B. & A.P.: In science we’re looking at a starry night. We also made star charts.
From K.L.: In art we are combining animals into one animal. We made clay animals and glazed them. We drew characteristics.
From J.P.: In health we are learning about alcohol and smoking. We’ve been told that is bad same with smoking. In health we also learned about diseases.
From T.C. & E.M.: What we did in P.E. was we did volleyball and it is fun. We did football and I loved it. In football I almost had the farthest throw. We learned about track. We did high jump. We also did shotput.
From T.S. & M.R.: In drama we are doing the Little Mermaid. There are almost 40 people in Drama. We would like to thank those people who were helping with the show. We all are glad that Mr. Thomas helped us make this play awesome.
From R.B.: In ELA we are reading The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe. And it is a great book. And we’re doing awesome worksheets.

Senior Lady Spartans Basketball
The 2015-2016 Spartan team finished the season with a record of 16 wins and 8 losses. The team, which was a mix of grade 10-12 students, won tournaments in Kamsack, Esterhazy, Moosomin and Langenburg. During playoffs, our Spartans were ranked 3rd in our conference. We defeated Moosomin but lost to Regina Christian. At Regionals, we went 1-1. We were defeated by Osler VCA, but rebounded with a win vs Tisdale.
Throughout the season, the team received many compliments from other players, coaches, refs, and community members. They wore the Spartan logo with pride and were fantastic ambassadors for our school. The sportsmanship and respect shown by the girls was evident on all of our basketball trips.
At this time I would like to say thank you to the grade twelve ladies that will be graduating this year. Malee, Kaylie, Kiera, Cassidy and Lexie – you will be missed.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid Junior
March 18th at the Togo Hall and March 21st & 24th at the Kamsack Playhouse, our junior drama troupe entertained audiences with our magical production.
Students auditioned for parts in December and have been practicing since, mostly in Mr. Thomas’ classroom but also on the stage and at the Playhouse during noon hour, after school, and on Saturday morning.
Our principal actors were very strong. Makayla Romaniuk (Sebastian) and Ilyana Carpenter-Bloudoff (Ursula) were so dedicated that they knew the whole play from beginning to end. Tara Taylor (Jetsom, Allana, Princess) and Megan Rafford (Flotsam, Arista, Princess) showed courage by taking on additional parts when needed. Jordyn Thomas (Flounder) was no guppy with her performance. Kate Erhardt (Ariel) dazzled with her acting, singing, and dancing as the little mermaid. Eric Moriarty (King Triton) had a believable fatherly presence on stage. Two grade five boys took on major parts. Dylan Weiss (Prince Eric) showed his awesome acting potential in improvisational games during rehearsal and delivered his lines verbatim in performance. Paul Spence-Gaines (Scuttle) loved hamming it up in front of the audience! All of these actors remain junior actors for next year.
The rest of the cast was quite versatile, as most students played multiple roles. Charlie Spence-Gaines, our lone grade 8 student, will be remembered for his rendition of “Les Poissons” as Chef Louis, but he also played a sailor, a newt, & a lagoon animal.
The highlight for Elizabeth Spence-Gaines (Aquata/Princess 1/Jellyfish 1/Chef 1/Lagoon Animal), Gerri-Lee Basaraba (Andrina/Princess 2/Fluke/Chef 2/Lagoon Animal), Leah Schwartz (Adella/Princess 5/Plaice/Chef 5/Lagoon Animal), and Petrie Whitehawk (Atina/Princess 4/Carp/Chef 4/Lagoon Animal) was undoubtedly their singing and dancing in “She’s in Love.” Zachary Burback (Pilot) started off every performance by soloing in “Fathom’s Below.” Jenaci Pelly (Grimsby) stepped out of her comfort zone to sing a solo in “The Contest.” Tynika Strongeagle (Gull 3/Sax/Chef/Sailor/Lagoon Animal), Brady Hilton (Gull 2/Bass/Chef 8/Sailor/Lagoon Animal), and Josh Hilton (Gull 1/Harp/Chef 7/Sailor/Lagoon Animal) strutted their “Human Stuff.” Curtis Berezowski (Seahorse/Sailor/Chub/Lagoon Animal) shouted out Sebastian’s introduction and “Uh oh!” debut in “Under the Sea.” Olivia Bos (Tentacle) was perpetually attached to Ursula. Seraphim Strauss (Carlotta/Jellyfish 1/Chef/Lagoon Animal) shone as a motherly Carlotta.
Our crew was also very busy. Karen Luu was extraordinary as sound director. Aiden Stone developed a knack for lighting. Boston Guillet, Will Zarchikoff, Gavin Zielinski, Anastasia Schwartz, Chloe Koroluk, Shaelyn David, and Mila Carpenter-Bloudoff did props and sets.
Mr. Thomas directed, assisted by Mrs. Schwartz and Ms. Costigan. Mrs. Schwartz created props, while Mrs. Fedorchuk and Ms. Costigan crafted costumes. Mrs. Fedorchuk, Ms. Costigan, and Mr. Angeloni constructed sets. Mrs. Tetoff and Ms. Doyle publicized the production. Mrs. Burback did so many things it is hard to list them all. Ms. Barron & Ms. Villeneuve helped with supervision, as did Mr. Moriarty and Mrs. Streuss.
A special thanks to Ms. Barron for her donation of makeup.
Shop Report
Shop classes have been going great. So far this school year we have been able to complete many projects. We have built a recycle bin and a shed for Victoria school. We have also been able to complete our class work and build other projects that support our school and the extra curricular programs. Good work students keep learning and building.

Art Room Buzz
It has been a busy but creative winter here in the art room at KCI.
Grade 5’s have been working on clay figures from popular culture as well as working on posters about our local watershed. The posters depict the importance of clean and habitable wetlands and their benefits for all species. These posters will be entered into a contest where the winners can walk away with some awesome Cabella gift cards.
Grade 6’s have been working on clay spirit animals. They were asked to first figure out which animal best fits their personality and mannerisms. Then they began drawing sketches of these animals before sculpting them out of clay. There was everything from bunnies, foxes, to penguins and bears.
Grade 7’s have been busy learning about, and mastering the painting techniques of master painter Van Gogh. We first analyzed his life and his painting style before creating our own scenes with bright swirling colours and choppy brushstrokes. Now they are finishing up a small surreal collage which combines magazine clippings with hand drawn elements.
Grade 8’s have been busy working in a new medium known as linoleum block printing. First they had to create a design that they wanted to carve and then began using the small gouges and chisels to carve away the rubbery lino. After carving the relief it was time to ink up the printing plate and then print it multiple times. The students really enjoyed the hands on technique and were all impressed with the final results.
Grade 9’s have been busy creating paintings inspired by Ojibwa artist Norval Morrisseau. Morriseau used what is referred to as an X-Ray technique when he painted a work of art. Not only do you see the person or animal that has been painted, but you also see the energy within the animal or person. We made an important local connection with this lesson, as our own Brian Marion apprenticed under Norval for 9 years. The students have been incorporating new symbolism into their art works and seem to really be enjoying this lesson.
The Senior Artists have been drawing, sculpting and painting and creating some truly wonderful pieces of art. We started the semester with some 2 point perspective drawings. This method uses vanishing points and a little bit of math to help create a sense of depth and dimension. Some created interior spaces while others focused on city architecture. Since then they have created a large watercolour paintings inspired by East Asian landscapes including atmospheric perspective as well as coiled clay creations. They are now focusing on analogous colour theory in a portrait painting. Looking forward to seeing these completed works!
