January 2017
Happy New Year - Gong Hey Fat Choy!
The Library has been a flurry of activity since we started back this January... new books, a library system update, HKYWA writing competition, exciting additions to our ebook library, planning for Book Week, getting displays up for the Lunar New Year, some excellent words of advice from our Year 2's and always, always, always finding wonderful new stories and ideas just sitting there on the Library shelves! Read on to find out what's been going on...
NEW BOOKS
The New Books bookshelf is positively bursting with titles from all sorts of genres and styles... so there is no excuse to have nothing to read!
CHINESE NEW YEAR
Our Chinese New Year books are out on full display so anyone can read up about it. Also look out for Sarah Brennan's newest title - Rickshaw Rooster - in celebration of this year's Chinese Zodiac animal.
This Library Rules!
The Year 2's worked hard to produce some fine looking posters on our Library Rules. If anyone is in any doubt about how (not) to treat the books, they can just check on the display board!
Ebooks!
We have some amazing new ebooks available right now to download on your smartphone, ipad, laptop or computer... check out our new additions that take us up to more than 350 titles in the collection. Click HERE to sign-in (kids know the password) Remember, they can use this anywhere, anytime on any device (not Kindle) and they can switch from one device to another, as long as they sign into the same account. It's perfect for the holidays... download at the airport with wifi and read on the plane! Too easy!
Harry Potter
Now the complete series is available in electronic format... if you can't find them on the shelves you can always get them in our ebook library!
David Walliams
David Walliams new title The Midnight Gang, available to borrow now! We don't even have this on the shelves in our Library yet, so be the first to get it here.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
The latest in the Wimpy installment. Diary of the Wimpy Kid is the most borrowed ebook at the moment, so this is sure to be a popular addition.
NEW YEAR, NEW LOOK!
Our Library management system has had an update over the holidays and we now have a brand new search engine called ORBIT, which ties in nicely with Peak School Planet Peak. It is much more user friendly than the old Olly interface with a cleaner layout and better functionality. We are teaching the students (and ourselves!) how to use it in Library lessons.
HKYWA 2017
We received some excellent entries for the Hong Kong Young Writers Award this year from Years 4, 5 and 6. The deadline was Friday 20th and we just scraped in but all entries have been accepted and now all we have to do is keep our fingers crossed! Well done to those that took the time to write (and edit) their stories.
Book Week 13-17th March 2017
We are gearing up for our Book Week which will be held 13-17th March this year. At the moment we are just beginning to plan but we are delighted to announce that we have secured 2 fantastic authors for the week:
Chris White: an author and illustrator extraordinaire from the UK.
“A bundle of energy on stage. Lots of audience participation and drawing - from the children in the audience, too. Very funny - a kind of Young Person's Stand-up Comedian Poet.”
- Roger Stevens
Matt Cooper: a local writer who has written two fabulous Hong Kong based picture books, plus his latest The Last Gibbon tackling this issue of endangered animals, which has a recommendation from Jane Goodall!
Matt is taking time out of his busy schedule at the Hong Kong Young Readers Festival to visit us and speak to some of the classes about becoming a writer and how he is inspired.
Tune in to our next NEWSLETTER for more exciting news and information about BOOK WEEK...
