What's going on in Room 32?
MARK YOUR CALENDAR~ Our swim field trip to the Gladstone Community Center has been scheduled for April 1, 2014. All parents are welcome…and you can even swim if you choose. I will be sending home more information as the date gets closer.
Just a reminder~ Fox Hill students will go outside for recess if the temperature and wind chill are above 25 degrees. Some students are not dressed warmly (no coats in January…yikes).
Special thanks~ Thanks to the parents who helped out at the Friendship Party this afternoon. We all had a great time.

For the L*O*V*E* of Learning!
In Writers' Workshop, the students have continued working on their biographies. This week, the students finished their research and many started their first drafts. We have spent a lot of time talking about organizing their writing. As students continue revising their drafts, we will really be working on transitions between topics. We will be finished with our biography project on February 28th.
Miss Perry and I will continue conferencing with individual students to monitor their progress. Their final copy will be typed.
In Readers' Workshop, we are revisiting asking and answering questions before, during, and after reading. We will be working specifically with informational texts next week. Although students have had some practice using what is written in the text to answer questions (while doing their research in writing), we are hoping to continue refining this skill. We will also be examining the different types of illustrations used in informational texts and how they help us gain additional understandings.
In Math, the students have continued to work on multiplication. This week, students have been developing strategies to use what they know to answer multiplication problems with larger factors. We are also practicing having conversations about math. We will continue working with students to help them explain their thinking and defend why the strategy that they used to solve the problems works. We have started to discuss the relationship between multiplication and division, but will look at division in more depth next week.
In Science, we continued our unit on matter and energy. After learning about measuring the mass of different objects and substances, we are now working to determine various volumes. Students will have experience measuring different volumes using liters and milliliters. Again, we will emphasize the need for a standard unit.
The start of our geography unit has been delayed so we may finish up our Science Unit and return the materials to Foss. We will begin Social Studies upon the completion of this unit. Our unit will focus on Geography.
