Chapter 7: Using Engagement Strategies
"Element 24: Increasing Response Rates
Increasing response rates enhances students' attention levels. Response rates refers to how many students are responding to the teacher's questions and queries. On the surface, asking questions of students might seem like a fail-safe engagement strategy--when students are answering questions, they are obviously paying attention to what is occurring in class. However, from a whole-class perspective, asking questions can be highly disengaging, especially if one student only is providing an answer to a specific question. While the single student who has been called on is attending to the question, no one else has to. The strategies within this element are geared toward getting as many students as possible to answer any given question. Strategies for this element appear in table 7.2 [below]."
