Normanby School Newsletter 20
Tuesday 3 November 2020

Principal's Message
Tēnā koutou katoa – Warmest greetings to you all.
I hope you all managed to find time to come and see our Art Exhibition. If not please check out the "Normanby Primary School" Facebook Page as you will find several photos displaying the children's amazing masterpieces.
It was wonderful to see so many families and friends visit our Art Exhibition and also purchase some PTA Raffle tickets at the same time. If you missed out, do not despair, we still have a few left to sell. You will be able to send money with your child or come into the office to purchase these.
We have three raffles:
- $100 note - $2 per ticket
- Scratchies - $2 per ticket
- Guess how many Jelly Beans in the Jar. - $1 per guess
Thank you for your continued support. We really do appreciate everything you do to help us give the children the best opportunities whilst at Normanby School.
As I said in previous newsletters, this year we have been working really hard as a team to improve the quality of writing across our school. We have worked with a facilitator to ensure we are targeting specific children and their ability to write purposeful pieces of writing which can be enjoyed by their audience.
Please keep encouraging your child to practise their writing skills at home. This could be in the form of a letter, postcard or email to a friend or family member.
You can also help your child by supporting them and being excited by their learning.
In each newsletter over this term I will give you some ideas that can be used at home according to the age and / or stage of your child. Over the last two weeks I have given you some ideas for young children in Year 0/1 and 2. Today we have some tips for children in Year 3. But of course these ideas can be used for any age and stage.
Year 3
Make writing fun
- Talk about interesting words with your child, especially ones that are fun to say, like "hippopotamus" or "ringaringa". Short and simple games could involve finding how many little words can be found using the letters in the word 'elephant'.
- Make up a story or think of a pakiwaitara (legend) or traditional tale and act it out with costumes and music, write down the names of the characters or tīpuna (ancestors).
- Make up a play with your child. You could help your child to write the play down. Use puppets they design and make themselves to give a performance to the family.
- Keep writing fun and use any excuse to encourage your child to write about anything, any time.
Give them reasons to write
- Writing for a real purpose can help your child want to write. For example, writing invitations, typing emails or writing and posting notes.
- Personalizing notes by cutting, decorating, sticking or stamping are great skills for coordinating fingers and creative. Postcards are a good size for a sentence or two and they are cheap to post, too.
- Encourage your child to write what they need to pack for a holidays, dictate your shopping list to them, or get them to write a list of jobs that need doing.
- Talk to your child about what they write. Be interested. If you don't understand what your child's picture or story is about, ask them to explain.
Supporting your child's writing
- Talk to your child about what you are writing - let them see you making lists, writing emails, filling in forms.
- Keep envelopes, forms you don't need so that your child can do their 'grown up' writing.
- Display your child's writing where others can admire and read it.
- Play with words. Find and discuss interesting new words - this can help increase the words you child uses when they write - look words up in the dictionary or on the Internet or talk to family and whanau members to learn the whakapapa (origins) of the words.
- Be a great role model. Show your child that you write for all sorts of reasons. Let them see you enjoying writing.
This week we have our School Athletics Days. I look forward to seeing children doing their personal best and having success in whatever they try to achieve. Don't forget to send through your child's PTA BBQ lunch orders by tomorrow (Wednesday) 3pm.
