OCTOBER IS DISABILITY AWARENESS MONTH
It is important during Learning Disabilities (LD) Month to focus less on the disabilities aspect and focus more on the incredible abilities so many of these individuals possess as well as emphasize the phenomenal achievements and important strides so many of these individuals have made.

ATTENDANCE
Was your child in school today?
It is important for your child to attend school every day. When a student misses a significant amount of school, even if the absences are excused, the child misses critical instructional time and learning opportunities. This often has long- term, negative effects on a child, such as lower achievement and a greater chance of not graduating on time.
Attendance is now part of the state accreditation status. In order to remain fully accredited, students must come to school every day.
If you see students that you know attend Maury and should be in school, but are not, please contact our Graduation Coach, Wes Price at 757-275-4514.

MAURY ORCHESTRA
News from the Orchestra World….
Twenty-nine students from the Maury Orchestra auditioned for the Southeastern Regional Orchestras on Saturday, September 22. Approximately 750 students auditioned for just over 125 spots within three different ensembles. I am happy to share the following results with you.
Placing in the TOP Ensemble in the Region and eligible for the All-Virginia Orchestra Auditions are:
Oliver Siegfried, 12, Symphony Violin
Angela Li, 12, Symphony Violin
Placing in the smaller ensemble and part of the TOP ensemble are:
Asa Britton-Jenkins, 12, Chamber Violin
Trent Anderson, 11, Chamber Viola Alternate
Placing in the third ensemble are:
Sydney Brown, 10, Preparatory Violin
Joseph Nashold, 10, Preparatory Bass
Haven Perronet, 10, Preparatory Bass
The aforementioned results are unofficial so the final total may increase. I am very proud of all 29 students who took their free time to prepare and audition for this event. In addition, four of the 29 ran in the Maury 5k and went directly to Landstown High School to audition. That is dedication!
Mark your calendars for our first concert of the season, October 24 at 7:00 PM. We are featuring Senior, Oliver Siegfried on violin who is performing “Winter” from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with the Chamber Orchestra.
