A few quick things about this week...

Quick Note...

We will be working on some projects in school during computer lab this year that your child may choose to want to work on at home. In order for your child to be able to work on their PowerPoints, Word documents, etc. at home, they will need a Flash Drive to save their work to. If your child wishes to have this option, please send a flash drive into school with them that is labeled with their name or initials.
*This is not a requirement!
Thank you!

We will be focusing on making inferences this week as we read nonfiction. When making inferences we focus on the following formula - "A Dose of Schema + A Piece of Evidence = A Solid Inference." (Background Knowledge + Text Clues = Inference)

*Students are aware that no Reading Journals will be collected this week. Reading Journals will be due December 2-5.

*A great website to visit to practice inferring skills is "Into the Book." Students can create their own usernames (I recommend they write them down!), and practice their reading strategies and skills with various games to play.

Writing & Spelling

We will be focusing on how-to/functional writing this week. Students will be choosing their topic, with it relating to their heritage. Please take some time to help your child think about what they can teach others to do that is related to his/her heritage. Some ideas include, but are not limited to: recipes, games, sports, holiday traditions, etc.

*We will also be discussing our Heritage projects this week in class. Expect an "outline/organizer" to be coming home for your child to complete in order to be prepared by THURSDAY for computer lab when we add information to our PowerPoints. Students will also have the opportunity to save their PowerPoints to their flash drives at that time, if they choose to work on them over Thanksgiving break. The choice is theirs to make!

Students should be writing at home 2+ times per week in their Writer's Notebooks. All "at home" entries should be dated and marked with an (H) to clearly identify an "at home" entry. Remember... the more they write, the better writers they will become!

Spelling Homework - NONE

*Each week's spelling list will be posted on our class website!

We are continuing Unit #4 - Decimals & Their Uses. We will be focusing on adding and subtracting decimals this week. Students should be prepared for a Quiz on Lessons 4.1-4.7 on Friday, November 21st.

Students should be reviewing their math facts through the use of xtraMath (www.xtramath.org) in order to reach mastery of all functions! I would expect all students to have passed addition at this point in the year!

Science ~ Matter

We will be beginning our Science unit on Matter. This is a large unit, and will split into two parts over the course of the year. The first part of our unit that we will begin exploring this week focuses on the properties of matter (solids, liquids, and gases), the similarities between them, as well as what makes each state of matter unique.

We are... a PEANUT & TREE NUT safe classroom!
