Siegrist Mission Statement

(developed by our Siegrist students)

We the Students of Siegrist will work together to become leaders
by showing good character traits
and practicing the 7 Habits.
We will have fun, work hard, and do our best to reach our goals
and change the world into a better place.

Last Call for Running Record Books

A couple of weeks ago, I stripped the two remaining boxes of running records of the books. I have a pile of books that I am happy to give to you to complete your kits, however I need you to fill out the missing books spreadsheet HERE. If I have a book, I will put it in your mailbox. Any remaining shortages will be forwarded onto AST to complete and order for replacement books. I have the titles that are highlighted in yellow. I am sending what is not taken by next week to AST to give to other schools....so don't wait :)

Student Innovation Team of the Week

StEP STORE

To provide our students with a safe and caring environment and promote positive choices and student leadership, Siegrist Elementary is participating in the StEP Program. StEP, a Student Empowerment Program through the UMKC Center for Economic Education, is a motivational program to promote positive student behaviors while engaging students in a financial simulation. All teachers and students in the building participate in the StEP Program. Students have the opportunity to earn "StEP Dollars" throughout the school day- in their classroom, at lunch, in specials, and at dismissal for showing leadership as well as demonstrating positive behaviors. A "StEP Store" opens once a month for students to purchase items or save their dollars for future store purchases. The StEP Store Student Innovation Team strives to support the StEP Program at Siegrist Elementary. Students on this team work with our Step Director, Heather Miller, to select items that students can purchase at the StEP store, organize the items, and help to guide their classmates through the process. Their help has been instrumental in getting our first StEP Store up and running this week!

Dinner for Conferences

Please make sure you fill out the google form to order your dinner for PT Conferences. Thanks to the social committee for planning this on a hectic night. Everyone's dinner break is from 4:00-4:30 (district wide).

Volunteers

PTA is asking for your help. If you are able to help stuff treat bags for our first holiday party they would be thrillled. They will be meeting at Siegrist on 10/18 at 5:30 and work until it is all done. You can certainly count this as your PTA obligation and kill two birds with one stone.....because the PTA meeting will be happening at the same time.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Please reach out to your parents who have not secured a time for Parent Teacher Conferences. You can always do a phone conference if conflicts prevent a parent from coming to the meeting. It is our expectation that we meet (either via phone or in person) with all students in October.

During PT conferences you will need to check out a laptop or chromebook to set up outside of your classroom so parents can take the parent survey. It is really important that you encourage parents to do this. The more feedback we get the better off we are.

WHY? This information allows us to refine our practices to meet the needs of our customers.

School Safety Training: Earthquake Drill

We will have our first Earthquake Drill on Thursday, October 20th at 1pm. More details will follow next week with specific procedures to follow.

Habit 1: Be Proactive

In support of our Siegrist Mission Statement, Siegrist Elementary School is studying The Leader in Me program (based on Stephen Covey’s work The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) as an introduction to personal leadership. We believe all students have the capacity to lead in their own lives and affect those around them by making positive choices. This leadership opportunity helps students learn practical character and life skills that will lead to those positive choices.

As we embark on this journey, we recognize that we have staff members understanding and implementing these practices at various levels. To increase our understanding of the 7 Habits, we will be introducing one of the habits each month in our staff newsletter as well as ideas and resources for classroom activities and discussions. We will also be arranging optional observations within our building for any staff members who would like to observe current staff members who are implementing 7 Habits lessons. We are beginning our introduction of the habits in October with Habit 1: Be proactive.

Being proactive means:

  • I am in charge of my own behavior- My behavior is the result of my choices and decisions.
  • I am responsible "Response-Able"- I have the ability to choose how I respond to people and situations.
  • I choose my actions, attitude, and my moods. I do not blame others.
  • I can make a difference.
