From Mr. R's Desk
Bobcat Nation,
Recently, I mentioned that we have to be INTENTIONAL and ACCOUNTABLE in the classroom. This week, I breakdown two questions: WHAT IS THE END? HOW ARE YOU ENGAGING KIDS?
WHAT IS THE END?
At the beginning of the school year and throughout, every teacher should always have the end in mind. Teachers should be asking... What is it that my students will be achieving by the end of the school year? As their teacher, what will be my role in ensuring that I make it happen?
As an 8th Grade US History teacher these were my goals...
- 100% of my students to pass the class with a 70 or better.
- 100% of my students to pass the state exam.
- 100% of my students to master all objectives needed for 11th grade US History exam.
- 100% of my PreAP to master all objectives needed for the AP History exam.
Once I was able to identify my goals, then I could start with my next set of questions. What steps do I need to take to achieve these goals? How will I accomplish this? What resources will I need?
Trust, that everything that we did in the classroom was with intent and purposeful. We did not have time to watch movies, do crossword puzzles, or spend countless days on an item that was not on the blueprint. My practices were always geared to accomplishing my goals.
HOW ARE YOU ENGAGING KIDS?
What are you doing that makes kids excited about your classroom? As I have stated before, students get excited about going to Athletics, Culinary class, Art, Band, Law Enforcement and at times Science class. Very few kids get excited about subjects such as Math, English, and/or History; hence the importance of having a great teacher who knows how to engage kids. As a teacher, you need to know your audience. You will never be able to engage kids if you don't know them and how they learn best.
For the most part kids want to... move around, use technology, work on projects, work in groups, work with visuals, and have meaningful discussions. Also, generally speaking, students do NOT enjoy... worksheets, 45 minute lectures, writing long essays, sitting on desks for the entire period, speaking in front of their peers, and/or being singled out.
Once you identify your audience then you can plan accordingly. There's no way you will engage kids without knowing them. Please do your homework when it comes to your audience. Remember, most lessons fail at the planning stage and this is the part where you identify your audience so that you may know how to engage them.
Stayed tuned of next week's topics...
