A Look at Our Week
It is the week of love, so all of our Leader Stickers this week will be awarded to children who are contributing to our class family by sharing, taking turns, solving problems by using their words, and other community minded behaviors. I see so many instances of love, kindness and problem solving each day that I want to reward your children specifically for their talents in these areas!
Now that we are transitioning to higher level reading texts, here are some tips for supporting your child's reading development at home:
- Go for a picture walk before reading the text, let your child look at the pictures and talk to them about what they see. You can use some of the vocabulary in the text during this discussion.
- Tell them the title - titles are always supplied to your kids before they start reading.
- Introduce the pattern of the words to them - this is not cheating! You can just tell them the pattern before they start reading. They'll have to use all their "Super Powers" to work out the break in the pattern, which usually occurs in the end of the readers.
- Remind them to use "Sound Power" (checking the first sound of the word), and "Picture Power" (checking the illustration for something that might start with that sound) when decoding unknown words.
- Remind them to use their pointer fingers at all times to follow the words (unless they are reading Level D books and beyond).
- If they get stuck, don't just tell them the word....ask them "What strategy could you use to work it out?". If it is a sight word you can say..."point to the word..."the"...or whatever the sight word is that they don't know.
Our first reading medals will be awarded this week for readers who have progressed to the next level of books. I will be giving them the opportunity to win a medal over the next month. I hope this motivates them to practice their sight words and reading at home!
Looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday, if possible, or in the near future if not. Miss Hughes and I love your children to bits, and we look forward to celebrating this love with them on the 14th!
Health Alerts...
Ringworm - there have been a couple of cases in Kindergarten. This is not a worm!! Ringworm is actually a fungal infection, so if you see anything suspicious on your child's skin, don't panic! Just take your child to the doctor for treatment, and cover any affected area.
