8th Grade Shaping Creativity Into Art!
MM Students Select Their Favorite Caudill Book!
Marie Murphy students have been casting votes for their favorite Rebecca Caudill (@RCYRBA) nominated titles during English the past 2 weeks. In order to vote, students must have read at least 2 of the 20 nominated titles (check out the entire list here). Amazingly, 88% of our students were eligible to vote and did indeed cast a ballot! That's 236 kids!

Board of Education Adopts Fees for 2020-2021 School Year
As part of its multi-year discussion of closing the District's budget deficit and instituting fees to raise revenue, at its meeting last night the Board of Education approved fees for the 2020-21 school year. Raising fees is never something the Board wants to do, and there are three basic ways families with financial challenges can be supported in fee paying.
- First, students eligible for Free Lunch waivers, will have these school fees waived too.
- Second, families not eligible for fee waivers can submit an application and documents to have their fees reduced through the Viking Fund or the District.
- Third, families can set up a payment plan to pay fees over the course of the school year rather than all at once.
In addition to raising existing fees either by CPI or by 10%, two new fees were approved. Round trip bus transportation for students living more than 1.5 miles from school will be $500 per year, one-way will be $300. Previously, only students living less than 1.5 miles from their school paid a bus fee. Second, for the first time Orchestra students will pay a $230 fee per year, with each subsequent Orchestra student in a family paying $115. That is consistent with the Band fee paid by students. Fee statements will not go out until later this year, and the Administration will continue to communicate about these changes on a regular basis.

Wilmette 39 & Avoca 37 Team Up for Summer Enrichment Program
Wilmette District 39 & Avoca District 37's five week Summer Enrichment Program offers children currently completing kindergarten through seventh grade an opportunity for fun, creativity, and learning.
What kind of classes are offered? Cooking, rocketry, sculpture, study about different countries, chess, drawing, math games, Minecraft, crafts, nature explorations, rope climbing, board games, science, social thinking, lots of sports, yoga, city building simulation, iMovie, fashion design, photography, physics, comic book art, animation, jazz band, song writing through technology, flag football, sewing and quilting, brain benders, and so much more! The 2020 SEP catalog is available online or at the Mikaelian Education Center, 615 Rd. Wilmette, at the Wilmette Public Library, and at all the school offices. Registration is open via the D39 webstore and runs through April 3.
Dates: The 2020 Summer Enrichment Program will be held on weekday mornings for five weeks, beginning Tuesday, June 16 and ending Friday, July 17. School will not be in session on Friday, July 3.
Location: This year’s program will be held at two campuses. Grades K–3 will be conducted at Romona School, 600 Romona Rd., and Grades 4–7 will be conducted at Wilmette Junior High School, 620 Locust Road.
Enrollment: Children who have completed any grade, Kindergarten through 7, may attend the Summer Enrichment Program. Students need not be residents of Wilmette District 39, except as noted. Students should register for the grade they will complete in June, 2020.
Schedule: Children may register for one, two, or three classes. All classes are 50 minutes long, with few exceptions. Bus transportation is available and "link-up" bus service is available after the last morning class each day to students enrolled in Wilmette Park District camps. Romona will be open from 8:20 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and WJHS will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. The periods are as follows:
- Period 1 – 8:30 – 9:20 a.m.
- Period 2 – 9:30 a.m. – 10:20 a.m.
- Period 3 – 10:30 – 11:20 a.m.
Wilmette Junior High School (4–7)
- Period 1 – 8:40 – 9:30 a.m.
- Period 2 – 9:40 – 10:30 a.m.
- Period 3 – 10:40 – 11:30 a.m.
Marie Murphy Choir Shines This Winter!
The Marie Murphy Choir has has wrapped up a busy season with performances at the New Trier Choral Festival and the annual Avoca District 37 Choral Concert.
On January 16, the Marie Murphy Choir teamed with performers from Sunset Ridge to open the New Trier Choral Festival. Their performance can be seen here. The New Trier Choral Festival is an annual event unting the middle schools of New Trier Township and New Trier High School in performance and song.
On February 13, the Marie Murphy Choir partnered with the Avoca West Choir and New Trier's Varsity Voices Choir for a daytime assembly for the 3rd-8th grade student body, as well as an evening performance at Marie Murphy School. Marie Murphy's Choir Director, Daniel Hammond, worked cooperatively with Avoca West's Choral Director Elizabeth Weismehl and New Trier's Music Department Chair, David Ladd to develop individual and combined pieces. The performances were excellent and can be seen here (daytime) and here (evening).
NT Offers Two-Week Summer Debate Camp for Incoming 7th & 8th Graders
New Trier Township middle schoolers who are looking to hone their public speaking skills, compete with their peers or who just love to debate can take advantage of a new summer camp at New Trier High School led by New Trier Debate Coach Aaron Vinson and current and former debate students.
Students entering their 7th or 8th grade year are invited to register for the Trevian Debate Camp, held during the weeks of July 13-17 and July 20-24 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the New Trier Winnetka Campus, 385 Winnetka Ave. More information and online registration can be found here: https://www.newtrier.k12.il.us/debatecamp/
All campers will be engaged in hands-on activities, friendly competitions, and exciting argumentation and public speaking challenges. Each year we focus our problem-solving challenges around a major topic that is designed to expose and prepare students for high school debate and of course to have fun!! We strive to create a positive "camp" atmosphere where campers are learning by doing!
Campers will develop core argumentation skills such as delivery, writing, and research skills. There will be multiple debates a day and students will build toward progressively longer debates that focus on: moral reasoning, policy comparisons, American politics, economics, and more.
