Segragation Limts Opportunities
Segregation limited the civil rights of African Americans. In 1890, Louisiana passed a Jim Crow law that segregated railroad cars. Two years later, Homer Plessy challenged this law by sitting in a railroad car reserved for white people. Homer Plessy was 7/8 white, and 1/8 black. Even though he was mostly white, he still had to sit in the black side because he had a little black in him.

Jim Crow Laws
Laws passed in the south that made segregation legal
Segregated from the laws: Pools, theaters, buses, cemeteries, hospitals, restaurants, water fountains, parks, and bathrooms.
Under the laws, white Americans and African Americans' lives were almost completely different.
In order for African Americans to vote, they had to pass a really hard test to test their knowledge. In some states, African Americans had to pay a voting tax in order to vote even if you pass the test. If African Americans could do all of those things, the government would just make more requirements to minimize voting for African Americans. All of these things destroyed the civil rights of an African American.

Right To Vote
Woman Suffragists faced a tough fight. In 1874, the Supreme Court ruled that being a U.S citizen did not automatically give women the right to vote. Instead, each state should decide women's political rights.
19th Amendment
The 19th amendment was an amendment that gave women the right to vote.
The bill was wrote in 1878 and was not created a law until 1920.
