June 2021 HHASD Newsletter
Inspire. Persevere. Grow.
We started this school year thinking that we may only be face-to-face for a few weeks. Here we are nine months later, and we only had to go virtual for a few weeks this year. What an accomplishment! Thanks to everyone in our HHASD community and family for helping us make this school year a successful one. While there were certainly challenges, we overcame them together; we also learned and implemented many new things that made us stronger.
As I reflect on last year's conclusion, I am so grateful and appreciative for the opportunity to be with all of you this year. As educators, our hearts are with our students, and last year was a tough ending. This year, we have an exciting week planned for our students -- to both celebrate the conclusion of any year, and to commemorate all we have overcome together this year! We will have some familiar traditions as well as some new ones-- some known, others a surprise -- all adding to the excitement of our last few days together, and making sure that each of these moments count and are memorable!
If you need anything, or have any questions, please reach out to a member of our team. Our office will remain open Mondays - Thursdays throughout the summer.

American Heart Association - Jump Rope for Heart A Huge Success!
WOW! A huge thank you to our students, staff, parents, and families and friends of Friess Lake Elementary School! Read on to see the letter we received regarding our participation in the American Heart Association's Jump Rope for Heart event:
Dr. Villalobos and Ms. Bunton,
During this unprecedented time, it has allowed me an opportunity to reflect on how fortunate I am. On behalf of the American Heart Association I write to share my appreciation for the impact of your school community and their volunteer leaders for their impact upon building healthier lives free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. It was my pleasure to work with these volunteer leaders who have gone above and beyond in the giving of their time and passion. Through their work to hold Kids Heart Challenge events at their school they have taught their students about taking care of their own hearts, how to react in case of an emergency and given families the opportunity to fund lifesaving research all while having fun. Research in the past has brought the United States the inventions of CPR, the pace maker and drug coated stents just to name a few. As an outcome there are 25% fewer deaths in American each year just since 2000 and we are moving towards the day when cardiovascular disease will no longer be the #1 cause of death.
I wanted to share the impact for the future by letting you know the names of the volunteer leaders at each school. It is also my hope that in upcoming years we can get full district participation!
Friess Lake Elementary
Nathan Heinritz & Principal Jen Shattuck
My experience with these two has been absolutely stellar, and I must commend the unbelievable work that they do. Further, it is very much worth noting that your community raised the MOST MONEY EVER even in the midst of the pandemic! This year, Friess Lake Elementary raised a jaw dropping $16,126.29!!
Your staff and faculty are teaching and modeling great character development and their unselfish giving to help others combined with providing education about healthy living through action is nothing less than noble. You have a community, students, teachers and principals that are really making a difference.
Thank you.
With heartfelt appreciation,
Aaron Montano

As we head toward summer, the pandemic situation appears to be trending in the right direction. In our survey last month we asked specific questions regarding what families are hoping for in terms of mitigation measures for next year. The response data from families is included here in the attached video and slidedeck. While we will continue to monitor our data and remain in contact with the WOPHD and area superintendents, overwhelmingly, the response has been a return to a more typical school year. Like last year, we will be engaging stakeholders in the process of reopening our schools. If you have already completed the survey that was included in the May newsletter, or signed-up on the most recent survey given, you do not need to do anything further at this time. If you would like to be a part of our planning team and have not yet indicated this, please complete the google form below. This team will not meet until July.

Ms. Quill reviewed the literacy budget
Ms. Harwood reviewed the technology budget
Ms. Shattuck reviewed the Forward Exam
Ms. Howe reviewed the preliminary budget with those in attendance. She went over some budget definitions including: fiscal year, funding (state federal and local), FTE (full time equivalency) 4K FTE, 3-5 year-old FTE, revenue limit, and declining enrollment. Howe further defined exemptions, student count funding, taxing and aid offset, hold harmless exemption, mill rate, and equalized valuation. Howe met with Robert W. Baird on consolidation aid. Howe remarked that enrollment is slightly down, on her review of trending data, the consideration of technology expense, and the positive funding of the ESSER grant and new Erate funding for remote student and teacher devices. Howe also noted the budget components of salary and benefits, long term debt, and OPEB.
Ms. Howe also reviewed the OPEB actuarial study and liability insurance quote.
Dr. Villalobos reviewed the open enrollment applications with the Board.
Dr. Villalobos provided an update on the pandemic. She reviewed several COVID graphs from the Washington Ozaukee county health department and remarked that things are trending in the right direction. The district’s area is still in the high range. Villalobos remarked that the Hartford area is again in the middle when looking at all of Washington and Ozaukee counties. Villalobos stated that the CDC made an announcement about vaccines; that people who had been fully vaccinated could go without masks. Because vaccines only recently became available to those older than 12, this update is only relevant for adults. Villalobos informed all that most of the districts were holding status quo and the guidance has not changed. The district is waiting for a statement from the health department on the CDC announcement. Villalobos’ recommendation is to continue with masks. The district is considering opening up recess zones and opening more classroom usage. The staff was surveyed on different options, such as face-coverings, changes in quarantine, etc. and the district is planning to do the same survey with parents.
The following items were approved: Secure Drill Report, 4K Report Cards, Math Proposal and Budget, Literacy Proposal & Budget, and Open Enrollment Applications.
