It is Flu Season!
The NJ Department of Health shares the following information regarding the flu:
Flu season is upon us. We want you to know what you can do to help prevent yourself and your child from becoming ill.
Influenza (“the flu”) is an infectious disease caused by a virus. Flu can cause serious illness that may result in hospitalization or death. Children with certain conditions are at high risk for flu complications, but most who get the flu are healthy children.
Flu symptoms include fever (often high (102-104° F) lasting 3-5 days), headache, muscle aches, fatigue, and weakness. May be accompanied by stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, cough, and chest congestion.
The single best way to protect against influenza is to get vaccinated each year. Yearly flu vaccination is needed because immunity against the flu wears off over time. In addition, the flu virus strains often change, so the vaccine also changes from year-to-year in order to match the flu viruses expected to be circulating in the community.
To reduce the risk of becoming sick with influenza, everyone 6 months of age and older should receive the influenza vaccine.
How else can I protect myself and my children from becoming ill?
Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially after changing diapers
Hand sanitizer is not a substitute for handwashing and does not kill some viruses
Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
Use good respiratory hygiene; cough and sneeze into a tissue or elbow and properly dispose of tissues. For more information about respiratory hygiene see the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website at http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/covercough.htm
Avoid kissing, hugging and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick
Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.
Stay up to date with immunizations, especially influenza
If your child has symptoms of respiratory illness, consult with your health care provider. Your child should stay home until these symptoms have resolved. Children with a fever must stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication.
If you need more information, please contact your family doctor, the school nursing team, or the NJ Department of Health.
Thank you for everything you do to help us keep your child safe and healthy!

Nico's Power Up Packs Community Service Project
It’s Power Up Pack Time!
Nico’s Power Up Packs are bags of crafts, toys, and activities for pediatric patients. They are named for Nico Cassabria, who was diagnosed with stage IV high risk neuroblastoma (a type of childhood cancer) at the age of 3 and spent 7 years of his life in and out of the hospital. Nico passed away at the age of 10, but his kindness and compassion will live on through Nico’s Power Up Packs. The name is a nod to Nico’s love of video games and all things gaming. Our hope is that Nico’s Power Up Packs will perk up or “power up” these young warriors.
We need your help!!
All donations will be collected during the week of February 18-February 21, 2020.
Each Grade level is encouraged to donate their designated item so we can Power Up some amazing packs for these pediatric patients.
