2016 "Be the One" Spring Gala A Smash Hit
The 2016 School Ministries of Birmingham Spring Gala was a great evening of fellowship and inspiration that allowed the ministry to cast its vision and raise awareness about its mission. With the ultimate goal being to host Bible classes in the public school systems throughout Birmingham and the surrounding communities, those in attendance were able to meet the students benefiting from the inaugural program at Spain Park High School and see the impact the program is already having on lives.
"The School Ministries of Birmingham team is so excited about the results of the Inaugural Gala. The interest shown is overwhelming," remarked SMB Executive Director Erica Faircloth. "We saw scores of people react to the decidedly unique opportunity we have to reach public school students with the Gospel during the school day. We know the Lord has great plans for School Ministries of Birmingham and can only dream of the lives that will be impacted for the Kingdom in the years to come."
A special thank you to Erica Howton, Jennifer Brown, Sandy Phelps and the whole 2016 SMB Gala Committee for the tireless effort they invested in making this a special night. Furthermore, we'd like to thank Jason Cook for serving as the evening's emcee and to Jason Dees for his call to action that concluded our evening.
We'd also like to offer our gratitude to our volunteers behind the scenes who spent the evening clearing tables and washing dishes. They include Kelly Drane, Bekah Powell, Naomi Kern, Hilliary Hallman, Emily Griner, Kelcie Schlensker, Lauren Wolfe, Matthew Bowerman, and Taylor Russell.
And finally, thank you to Sarah Cook who captured the evening in photographs. To access her photo gallery, go to http://cookwire.zenfolio.com/smbgala2016.
Todd Gerelds
Growing up during a time of tense race relations, Gerelds witnessed his father's football team dedicate their lives to Christ, which immediately unified them as a group despite the color barriers that persisted around them. He left us to consider these verses as we also strive to use the grace and love of Christ to unify our schools, communities and churches here in Birmingham and beyond.
John 13:34-35
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
Ken Breivik
Ken Breivik, the national Executive Director for School Ministries, spoke to the concept of "What is your Legacy?" According to Breivik, the Lord has prepared the work to be done through School Ministries of Birmingham ahead of time, and it is now up to each of us to join together to help this ministry leave a legacy of grace and love through the Gospel for the youth in the public school systems throughout Birmingham and its surrounding communities.
His message led us to the words of Ephesians 2:8-10.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."
Because God has saved us by his grace and not of our own accord, we should be prepared to do the works he set out for us. The time to get to work in now!
