Greek Cultural Contributions
Greek architecture is known for it's columns. There are three types of columns Doric, Ionic, Corinthian. Other types of Greek art include pottery, sculptures, and paintings. Every city-state had a temple that was dedicated to a specific god. They went there to worship and make sacrifices. some leaders like Pericles and Alexander the Great spread the Greek architecture throughout Europe.
We see Greek influence in architecture today in important buildings. The White House, Capital Building, Supreme court and the Lincoln Memorial all have columns that show Greek influence.
The government was an oligarchy, which involved excluded power from the whole citizen-body. It was a direct democracy everyone could voice there opinion and vote on laws. You had to be a male and 18 to vote. It's kinda like the lottery. If you were the president you could only serve two terms.
There was slavery in ancient Greece. The wars that occurred was the Battle of marathon, the first Persion war, the Peloponnesian war, the Archidamian war, the Sicilian war, and the Ionian war. We have a democracy today. Once you are 18 you can vote. We still have term limits today. You can be a president for four years. you can run for president two times.
Free men only played sports in ancient Greece. In ancient Greece they boxed, weight lifted, running, long jump, and chariot. men that were unmarried and were gods watched sports. Betting made competition skyrocket due to the possibility of losing money. In ancient Greece they were serious about sports and Believed their gods liked to see men's body's that were fit and graceful.
We sill have Olympics today. We have many of the same events that they had in ancient Greece. Some of the events were Javelin, running, shot put, and long jump. We still see horse racing today at county fairs.
The ancient Greeks combined literature with religion to explain events in the world around them. Some of the mythological heroes are Hercules, Odysseus, Perseus, Atalanta, and Jason are herds of ancient Greece. Zeus was a ruler of mankind. Hodes was a ruler of family. Hermes is a ruler of trade. Ares is a ruler of war. Demeter was a ruler of Harvest. Hades was the ruler of the underworld.
Apollo was the ruler of sun and music. Athena was the ruler of wisdom and arts. Poseidon was the ruler of seas. Artemis was a ruler of the hunt. when people died they went to the underworld. Hercules, and Purrsy Jackson we still study them today.
Some philosophers in ancient Greece were Aristotle, Thales, Zeno, Pythagoras. Some ideas or beliefs of each one is Aristotle-Things of any variety have characteristic function. Thales-Believed the world originated from water. Goriias-Believed in "making the weak stronger. Things they wrote Odyssey, Illiad, The Republic laws, Symposium.
Some important questions about life did the Greek philosophers try to answer, What is wisdom, what is the right thing to do, what is beauty. How were the philosophers regarded and treated. The philosophers were treated badly and the injury didn't respect what they did. We still see Drs. using the Hippocratic Oath. We use some math skills today like PI, Pythagoream and still study geometry.
