Gab from Ms. Gallagher
News from White Oak Elementary 5th Grade
We're off to a great start in 5th grade!
We have had a very busy first six weeks of school! In math, we have been learning about decimals -- rounding, ordering, comparing, adding, and subtracting. In reading, Roald Dahl's The BFG is making us all laugh while we learn about the elements of literature. This week brings an end to our science unit on matter, and we have had some amazing experiments with chemical change and making Oobleck! In homeroom skills time, we are about halfway through with The Sisters Grimm, so please ask your student about it -- it's a wonderful book!
Happenings Around the School
Acrostic Poetry
We introduced ourselves the first week of school by writing acrostic poetry. We learned that structure by writing one first for Mr. Clarke! He came down so we could share all of the adjectives we came up with to describe him!
Decimal STEM Activity
We read The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, then we used graham crackers, pretzel sticks, and marshmallows to represent ones, tenths, and hundredths. We built houses, then we used a blow dryer to huff, puff, and try to blow them down!
It's OOBLECK!
Is it a solid or a liquid...or a little of each?! We had a great time making Oobleck out of cornstarch , water, and food coloring. In the meantime, we learned about the properties of matter!
Read-A-Thon
I hope you're all participating in our second annual Read-A-Thon! Friday is the Family Night featuring a show by Ken Scott the magician, as well as a hot dog dinner. All of the money donated for the Read-A-Thon goes to our school to support our students, so please help us reach our goal! Log in those reading minutes and get sponsors for your reader.
