From Our Principal Jordan Mills
Dear Bridgeport Families
Welcome to 2022! I would like to update you on two topics at Bridgeport right now: COVID and our new health and human sexuality curriculum.
COVID News
We have been working hard to keep our students safely in school and learning in person through this January COVID surge. Some families are asking why the middle and high schools have moved to temporary online learning but elementary schools have not. One of the main reasons has to do with the number of exposures that happen at the secondary schools because of how many different classes students have each day. At elementary school, most students stay with the same class all day. In addition, attendance at the elementary level has been higher than in the secondary schools and we have also had enough teachers and substitutes for our classes.
As it stands, we are able to contact trace and test students according to the county test-to-stay rules so that healthy students can keep attending classes after an exposure at school. We also appreciate that our families are working hard to communicate with our school, keeping students home when they are sick, and finding tests for students when they are needed.
We know that there are a number of benefits to learning in person, especially for elementary school students who are still learning to use technology and may not be successful learning online without a lot of help from an adult. That said, the health and safety of our students is our highest priority. When there are multiple cases of COVID in a classroom, in addition to other absences, quarantines, and the possibility that the virus may have spread at school, we will transition individual classes to online learning temporarily. We hope to use this approach infrequently, but will make this decision if needed in order to protect students’ health and safety. We also hope to avoid transitioning to online learning as a whole school, but again, will make this decision if based on the data we are collecting it is in the best interest of students’ health and safety.
Thank you again for your flexibility and efforts to keep our students healthy and learning. I am so appreciative of our Bridgeport students and families. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns that you have related to COVID.
Health Curriculum
This week families received both electronic and paper copies of a letter explaining a bit about our new health and human sexuality curriculum that we will begin teaching in a few weeks. This curriculum aims to prevent sexual abuse and violence as well as teach about human anatomy, growth and sexuality. There are several lessons for each grade level, kindergarten through fifth grade, and they build on each other in a developmentally appropriate way. Our fifth grade classes used the materials last year and had a great experience. All genders are taught together as a class and, as a result, the students really develop a more complete understanding of the material and true empathy for one another.
I would encourage families to view the materials before we start teaching them. You can view them online or in person. Please request to view the materials using the link in the letter or by filling out the paper form that came with the printed letter. Being familiar with the materials may be helpful for you as students ask questions or share what they are learning at school. If after viewing the materials, you determine that you would prefer that your student complete an alternate assignment, you can complete the opt out form to have your students sit out for some or all of the lessons. Again, I strongly encourage all families to take a look at the lessons prior to their delivery. Please reach out to our office at bridgeportoffice@ttsd.k12.or.us or 503-431-4200 with any questions about previewing the materials.
Wishing you all a healthy, restful weekend. As always, please feel free to contact me anytime.
Sincerely,
Jordan Mills
