Happy New Year!

We've had a great start to 2019 at Lakeview. Some of you may have given up sweets for New Years, but consider this: Mem Fox, an Australian children's writer, said,

"When I say to a parent 'read to a child,' I don't want it to sound like medicine. I want it to sound like chocolate." Setting aside time for reading should not sound like a chore. Rather, it should be something valuable. (Of course, reading and eating chocolate together sounds even better, but that might break some New Year's goals!)

A Helicopter?

Yes, a helicopter landed on our west playground on Friday. We were alerted by local law enforcement that Flight for Life would be landing in response to a local emergency. The emergency was not a student or staff member at Lakeview.

We try to communicate with families as quickly as possible in these types of incidents. Our first thought is to coordinate with local law enforcement and ensure the safety of our students and staff. Once that is assured, we communicate to families. We appreciate your patience and understanding in these incidents.

MAP Testing

Three times each year, students take the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) assessment. This is a test we use internally to gauge student growth and achievement. Each student takes a math test and a reading test. Although a few classes started testing this past week, most of the testing is happening the week of January 14-18. Please see individual grade level newsletters for the dates. We take these assessments seriously, so please talk to your child about it, be sure she/he gets a good night of sleep, and eats a healthy breakfast.

McTeacher Night at McDonald's

If you love your teacher and you love McDonald's, then we've got the perfect combination for you! McTeacher night at the South Milwaukee McDonald's - where the teachers help work. Don't worry, we don't cook the food. But I can't promise that you'll get the right toy in your happy meal. McDonald's donates 20% of your food order total to the Lakeview PTO when you use this flyer. Again, we'll send home the flyer in the Tuesday folder on January 15.

Math Homework Helper Night

Families - next week is another great opportunity for you to work directly with our elementary math coach, Ms. Beth Schefelker. On Monday, January 14, she will offer another session of Homework Helpers to help families understand math concepts. This month's session will be at E.W. Luther, but families from any school are welcome. See this link for times and topics. Be sure to mark future dates on your calendar as well!

Literacy Night is coming up!

Each year, the school district hosts a wonderful Literacy Night to celebrate all the ways we love literacy - reading, writing, listening, and speaking. This year, the event is on Friday, February 8th from 5-7:30 p.m. at the high school. If you pre-register using this flyer, a light dinner is provided. There will be student work shared, several make-and-take opportunities, and even a session with children's author Bob Raczka. If you are unable to print the flyer, a hard copy will be in the Tuesday folder on January 15. Just be sure to return by January 30.

News from Mrs. Cosgrove, GT Coordinator

Welcome back! I hope you had a wonderful Winter Break. As mentioned in last month’s newsletter, here are a couple of upcoming enrichment events. The Geography Bee is an enrichment opportunity available to all students in grades 4 and 5. At Lakeview, the Geography Bee is scheduled for Tuesday, January 15th at 9:00 am in the Music Room and families are welcome to come and watch. Spelling Bees are also coming up following Winter Break! This is especially true for 5th-8th graders who will have the chance to qualify for the District Spelling Bee, held on January 30th at 1:30. For more information on GT news and happenings, please contact Mrs. Cosgrove at jcosgrove@sdsm.k12.wi.us. Thank you!

New Visitor Management System

School safety is our #1 priority. Starting February 4th, a new visitor management system will be in effect at all four elementary schools. Please see this letter for more information. Starting February 4th, every visitor will need to present an ID at the main office (such as a driver's license) for scanning.

Kindness Week January 29-Feb 1

We expect students to be kind every day at Lakeview, but the last week of January is set aside by many schools as "Kindness Week". At Lakeview, that will mean some dress up spirit days, a coin war to collect funds to build a health clinic in Liberia, and a kindness chain that will take the kind acts that happen within Lakeview and make them visible in our hallways. More info will follow in future newsletters.
