Connections
Welcome to Connections - Issue 2 - w/c 19 September 2022
Viewpoint
Welcome to the second edition of Connections for this academic year.
I hope your son or daughter enjoyed their first week in college and that they will have fun at our Freshers' Day today.
It is very important to us all here at the College that all students are settled and feel happy on their course. If they are not, it can be a sign that they are not on the right course for them. Please encourage your son/daughter to discuss any concerns they have with one of the vocational team, a Progress Coach or LSA, as they will be able to help talk through any issues and arrange for additional support or a transfer of course if necessary (subject to availability). If you would find a conversation with a member of college staff helpful, please contact your son or daughter's Programme Leader in the first instance (contact details are below).
If you have not already signed up to ProPortal, we encourage you to do this as soon as possible. Instructions are below.
Best wishes.

Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG)
This week students have had an introduction to the Personal Development Programme (PDP). The team has planned an exciting programme of personal development sessions for our students; each term has a theme:
Respecting myself and others - Soft skills, promoting tolerance, and personal awareness
Employability - Careers and employability, supporting students to succeed in the workplace
Respecting my future - Skills and experiences students will benefit from having as they progress to the next step in their career.
You may find this guide for parents and carers useful. We would like to mention that it is a UK magazine, so not all of the content will be relevant, however, it contains a lot of careers information and guidance and ideas on how you can support your son/daughter, which you may find helpful.
Access students undertake Marble Challenge
Students across the Access department took part in a team building activity to build a marble challenge this week as part of their induction week. These activities worked to develop their problem solving, communication and social skills while a great time was had competing as teams.
ProPortal and reports available to parents/carers
ProPortal is a student record system that allows parents and carers to view live information about their son or daughter, and is the main way we keep you updated on your son/daughter’s academic progress and attendance. It is a very useful tool, and access is available via our website on www.guernseycollege.ac.gg, click on >>College Links from the drop down menus along the top and then >>ProPortal, which will bring you to a log in screen.
Please click HERE to access ProPortal login page and get started. You will need your son/daughter's student reference number (these are printed on a student's ID card). The first picture below shows the sign in screen, with instructions on how to start the process of registering. If new to ProPortal, you will need to click on >>Submit An Account Request; if you have already signed up but need a reminder of your Password, you should click on >>Forgot your password?
We ask you to sign up to ProPortal at the start of term so you can stay up-to-date with your son/daughter’s progress. You will be able to view their
• Lesson Timetable
• Attendance and punctuality
• SMART targets
Once you have had confirmation that your request has been accepted, you can then
log in to your ProPortal account (following the further instructions in the first image below) and view your son/daughter’s lesson timetable and details of their attendance by clicking on the Information drop-down menu at the top right hand side of the screen (see the second image below). Your son or daughter's attendance and punctuality and SMART targets can be accessed by clicking on the student ILP drop-down next to this (see the third image below).
If you have any questions, are having any problems accessing ProPortal or creating an account, require any of your details to be changed, or if you would like to be removed from our systems/records, please email college@gcfe.net
Useful Information
UCAS Applications - update
UCAS has a really useful parent guide, with the option of signing up to newsletters, accessed via this link. Please take some time to look at this information if your son/daughter/ward is in their final year.
Here is the application timeline:
2 Dec 2022: All Student Applications to be Completed and Submitted
9 Dec 2022: All Progress Tutor References Completed and Form Checked (inc. Quals)
16 Dec 2022 : Final College Deadline for Submission of All Applications to UCAS
Students are supported in planning for their next steps by the Progress Tutor team. We encourage all Level 3 students to explore the option of Higher Education and, through the use of Unifrog and UCAS.com resources, students are helped to understand the opportunities available to them. Those who are keen to apply through UCAS are guided through the registration and application process and supported in the development of their Personal Statement. For any questions relating to UCAS please contact Jeffs@gcfe.net.
