2021 Stanley Avenue Tennis Championships
Over the final weeks of Term 2 a strong group of Year 7/8 students battled it out in order to win the prestigious Stanley Avenue Girl and Boy Tennis Cups. We were fortunate enough to be able to practice and play our competition games at the Te Aroha Turf Tennis Courts. Student’s played in a round-robin format, with students learning the art of umpiring along the way. In a hard-fought and tense Boys final Jake Horan emerged victorious over Jake Anderson. In the girls' division Taranpreet Singh- Mahal (2020 Runner Up) took the spoils with victory over Greer Gemmell. All students are to be credited for the way their tennis skills improved throughout the tournament along with their sportsmanship.
We would like to thank the Te Aroha Tennis Club for allowing us to use their courts. This was greatly appreciated by all.
Girls Champion- Taranpreet Singh- Mahal
Girls Runner Up- Greer Gemmell
Boys Champion – Jake Horan
Boys Runner Up- Jake Anderson

These students practised and learnt skills throughout Term 2. A huge thank you to Brendon Farac who helped each week at the courts with coaching.

This year we are introducing a Girls Cup as well and these were the results.

Netball roundup for 2021 season
The season culminated in a mini-tournament on the closing day with the teams dressing up in coloured tutus and having some fun with their teammates.
A big congratulations to our Year 7/8 team for being the winners of the opening round of netball this year, sharing the Buttons trophy with Te Aroha Primary. Thank you to Tania Gemmell for coaching and being there for our team each and every week, encouraging them to have fun and enjoy the benefits of playing a team sport. also thank you to Shayleigh for being the team's umpire each week.
Our year 5/6 team went through the 2021 season with only 1 loss to TAPs and were the winners of the closing and the championship round. Well done girls and a huge thank you to Elle Holder and Sarah House for Coaching, Managing and Umpiring this team. Many of these girls have only been playing netball since 2020 and the improvement made in their skills and understanding of the game of netball were impressive and a credit to everyone involved. It was wonderful to see such big smiles on all their faces after the games.
Thank you to Ally Van Kuijk who has been the inspirational leader of our Year 1-4 Netball programme on Saturdays for the last few years. It is always wonderful to see a love of our game passed on to our future ferns.
Thank you also to the parents and caregivers who come along each week to support your children, and to the many Grandparents, Aunties, Uncles and friends who cheered from the sidelines.
Without volunteers, netball in Te Aroha would not happen. I encourage you all to take up the challenge of being involved with your child's netball journey. From my own personal experience, it is a very rewarding one.
Regards
Kim Hayes
Go the Silver Ferns!!
2021 Stanley Avenue Cross Country
On Wednesday 18th August we will be running our School Cross Country. (Saving Day- Thursday 19th August). This is a whole school event that takes place at Boyd Park, starting at 1pm.
For the day to be a success we need parent volunteers to assist with being the track marshalls. This will involve being placed at different parts of the Wetlands or Boyd Park to ensure student safety. It can also double as a great spot to watch the races! If you are able to help please contact Di Meyler 027 272 2227 or the office. Keep watching this space for details of the race order, with the approximate times.
Hearing and Vision Checks Monday 16th August
Vision Hearing Technicians from Community and Southern Rural Health will be visiting our school. The objective of the test is to identify previously undetected vision and hearing defects.
If any parents/caregivers do not want their child to be checked, or their child is currently under specialist care for a vision or hearing defect, please let the school office know.
Which children are routinely checked?
-Children who have not completed vision and hearing checks as part of their B4 School Check
-Children absent from the previous visit, require retests or follow up
-In special circumstances, parents, teachers, or others may request a vision or hearing check.
What tests are carried out?
Ears
Audiometry (hearing test)
Tympanometry – middle ear function test (only carried out when a hearing test is not within a normal range)
Eyes
Long distance vision tests – not a complete visual examination, but a simple screening test
NB All of these checks are non-invasive, safe and should cause no discomfort.
