The Puma Pride
Week of October 22, 2018
Principal's Message
It was another exciting week at Willow Dale Elementary. Our Kindergarten students learned about respecting personal space from Ms. Hopkins and Ms. O'Brien, our school counselors. They also had a visit from their 5th grade Puma Pals. The 5th grade Puma Pals visit throughout the year to work with the kindergarten students on special projects and to make connections with our youngest Pumas.
Over the summer, several messages were shared with the community regarding the CSD Summer Reading Program. We are thrilled that many of our students participated. This week, Ms. Zucker, the school librarian, began to recognize the students who completed their summer reading. All students who completed their summer reading were entered in a prize drawing. Thank you to our families for making reading a priority so that our students are successful both in and out of school. Keep reading!!
The Gals and Pals Fall Ball held on Friday, October 19, was a huge success. An awesome time was had by all who attended. Thank you to our Home & School parents for hosting this fun event. Pictures will be shared in next week's newsletter.
This week, on October 25, our School-wide Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports and No Place for Hate Committees will host the Chris Clark Mountain Bike Stunt Program. Chris Clark's Athletes Who Say NO program was developed to inspire children to find an active, healthy passion and use their desire to constantly improve as a means for keeping their lives on track, making healthy decisions and surrounding themselves with like-minded friends. During his high energy presentation, professional cyclist Chris Clark shares his story of growing up with a passion for cycling and how he used that passion to make friends, stay healthy, and even as an excuse to avoid the peer pressures all children face. Topics discussed include:
- Helmet/sports safety
- The importance of having an active hobby
- Avoiding drugs and alcohol to reach your potential
- Finding friends who support your active lifestyle
The following is the assembly schedule.
- Grade 3 - Grade 5: 9:00 AM - 9:40 AM
- Kindergarten - Grade 2: 9:40 AM - 10:20 AM
The fall weather looks like it is here to stay. Please make sure students are appropriately dressed for the weather. The staff makes every effort to remind students to retrieve their jackets, etc. from the recess yard, cafeteria, or classroom. However, there are times that these items are left behind. Labeling of items is helpful in this instance. If your child is missing an item, have them check the classroom first. The lost and found is located in the front office.
Please take the time to review the information shared in the newsletter. Thank you for partnering with the school to ensure that all of our students are successful.
Have a fantastic week!

Art Class
W.D. ART ROOM Update:
The art room has been very busy this year making lots of art. Most classes are on their third project of the year. Students in different grades have been working with different materials to complete drawing, painting, printmaking, weaving, and sewing projects. Ask your student about what they are working on in art!
Our first project of the year for everyone was to create a square work of art for our first Art fundraiser of this school year. This fundraiser is being hosted by the company Square1Art. Students original works of art were already sent to the company and are currently being turned into sticker sheets and custom catalog packets featuring your child’s art, that will be sent home soon (Oct. 31st). Once you get your child’s fundraiser packet you will be given a link to the website where you can purchase your child’s art on different items like travel mugs, bags, aprons, ornaments, coffee mugs, pencil holders, etc. This is the first time Willow Dale is partnering with Square1Art for this unique opportunity to share your child’s art with loved ones.
Orders will be due by November 7th!
Willow Dale created a painted snow plow this year to compete in the Paint the Plow competition. The snow plow will be on display at Touch the Truck event on November 3rd (updated) from 10am-1pm at Warminster Park.
The art room is always looking for donations of washed yogurt cups + paper plates. We use these to help distribute materials like paint or glue.
Other items that can be donated are baby wipes, cleaning wipes, skeins of yarn, felt, plastic grocery shopping bags, and newspapers.
Art Room volunteers: If you are still looking to volunteer in the art room, we are looking for volunteers to come in during the morning on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. If you are interested please email: dowau@centennialsd.org
In the Spring during open-house, your child will have a work of art on display at our school-wide art show. This is our third year partnering with Artome, a company that frames each work of art that is created. It is our second Art fundraiser of the year, where you will be able to purchase your child’s framed art and take it home with you the night of the art show. Informational flyers will come home closer to the Art Show date.
If you want to know what we are doing in the art room, check out @mrsdow_artroom on Instagram for all the latest updates.
Upcoming ART dates:
- Square1Art flyers come home: October 31, 2018
- Square1Art orders due: November 7, 2018
- Artome Framed Art Show during open-house (entire school): April 11, 2019 (6-8pm)

While coming to school each and every day is important, it is equally important to monitor our children’s health. If a child is sick, please keep him/her home. Our teachers will work with students who have fallen ill to make sure they do not fall behind in the classroom.
If your child is absent from school, you will be notified via a voice message that will come to the primary phone number listed in Skyward. In addition, an email will be sent to the first email address listed in Skyward. Please be sure that your phone number and email address is updated in Skyward. If an automated call is made, and you believe it to be in error, please call the main office of the school. Automated calls and emails may still occur even if you’ve contacted the school regarding the absence. Absence notes will still be required. You can send a written note in with your child on the day that he or she returns to school. You can also email the excuse note.
