We are using the Second Step Program: Skills for Social and Academic Success as our Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum in all elementary schools in our district. The Second Step program teaches children important skills for getting along with others and doing well in school. It also helps our school and community be a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn. These lessons are taught in the classroom by your child’s teacher on a regular basis throughout the year.
The Second Step Program also has a Child Protection Unit which our district has adopted as part of our health curriculum. The 4 lessons in this unit focus on these concepts:
*Personal Safety. Children will learn important safety rules, such as safety around fire, with dangerous items, and when riding on wheels or in cars. They will also learn ways to help them decide if something is safe or not.
*Touching Safety. Children will learn about safe, unsafe, and unwanted touches, and rules about touching private body parts. They’ll also learn to say no to unsafe or unwanted touches, and to tell a grown-up if someone breaks rules about touching private body parts.
*Assertiveness. These lessons will also give children a chance to practice asking a grown-up for help, telling a grown-up about an unsafe situation, and being assertive to get out of unsafe situations.
I am teaching these lessons one grade level at a time. You will be notified at least 1 week before these lessons are taught. Additional information is in the attached letter. A hard copy of the letter will be sent home on Monday in your child's blue folder. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at: email@example.com or (503) 673-7957. Thank you!
