Bulldog Bulletin
New Britton Elementary - February 19, 2016
Principal's Message
Dear Bulldog Families,
We have packed a LOT of learning and growing into our short week this week! Just one example of some in-depth learning was showcased with our annual science fair yesterday. Eighty-five students chose to participate and then share their findings with our judges. Our project titles included everything from Cloudy with a Chance of Coke to Does Chewing Gum Improve Test Performance. I was so impressed with the wondering, research, experimentation, and communication of all of our participants! Our judges were also impressed with our students’ work and enjoyed interacting with our young scientists. I would like to give a special thank you to the fourteen judges from Eli Lilly who volunteered their time and expertise to benefit our children. We are so fortunate to have this continued partnership with Lilly scientists. I would also like to thank Tobias Holsman for serving as our parent Science Fair Coordinator with the assistance of our teacher representatives Mrs. Risinger and Mrs. Sanders. We were also fortunate to have many parent volunteers assist with science fair along with the generous support of our PTO – THANK YOU! Thank you to our teachers for promoting our students’ love of science!
If you have a student in grade K-3, I encourage you to consider their participation in this enrichment opportunity next year. As always, thank you for partnering with us in education.
Sincerely,
Lori Mankin
Congratulations to our Science Fair Winners!

ATTENTION 3RD and 4th GRADE PARENTS – ISTEP part 1 testing will be the during the time period of February 29 through March 11. ISTEP part 2/CCRA (College &Career Ready Assessment) testing done online during the time period of April 18 through May 6. NBE normally tries to get the testing done in the beginning of the time period and more so in the morning so that make-up’s can be done later in that date timeline. As the time gets closer, teachers will send out detailed dates and information to parents.
The Indiana Department of Education has provided parents with some information concerning the testing at the link below:
http://www.doe.in.gov/assessment/istep-grades-3-8
Teachers will be providing students the opportunity to go online to learn about the new ISTEP/CCRA assessment. Below is the link for you and your child to look over in your home and will give you a chance to see some types of questions that will be on the assessment.

3rd grade parents only – IREAD3 testing will occur on March 14 through March 18. Attendance during these days is very important; please make every attempt to reschedule dentist/doctor appointments around the test dates.
Here are just a few tips for a good start to every morning and they also make for an even better testing situation:
- Get a good night’s sleep. This is important every night!!!
- A good morning at home makes for a good morning at school.
- Eat a good healthy breakfast.
- Wear comfortable clothes.
- Talk to your students about the test in advance not just the week of the test. Remind them to give their best effort today and everyday. This test is important, but too much stress can be a problem also.
- Encourage your student to listen to the teacher for directions.
- Remind your student that they can figure out tough questions that they have the grit and perseverance to figure it out.
- Encourage your student to think positively – they can do this!!!
- Smile J and tell a funny joke – laughing is good for everyone.
Thanks for your help.
NBE Dining for Dollars at Texas Roadhouse
Hello New Britton Families! We have a “Dining for Dollars” event coming up on Tuesday, February 23rd at Texas Roadhouse from 4-10pm.
Dine in or Carry Out and tell them you are dining for New Britton Elementary and the PTO will get 10% of our receipts. Your student will bring home a Texas Roadhouse envelope to take with you to the restaurant that night. Open it with a manager at the restaurant, and you will receive a prize for the next time you dine with them.
We look forward to seeing you there. Thanks for supporting New Britton Elementary!
Volunteers needed!
Hello, New Britton families! After School Enrichment Week is next week and enrollment is now complete. Permission slips were sent home with your student this week. Please check their folders for these important documents which will need to be signed and sent in the day of their classes next week. Phone calls will be made to attempt gaining permission for each student failing to have their permission slip. If permission is not given, the student will not be allowed to stay for their after school enrichment class. Hopefully, the students participating will enjoy their selected class and learn something new, too!
If you have any questions, please contact Kelly Mason at 317-457-0312 or mkmason@sbcglobal.net
