# Mrs. Grant's Kindergarten

## Valentine's Day

We will be celebrating Valentine's Day by exchanging nice cards next Thursday! A class list will be coming home this week and please try and have your child be a part of the making process as much as possible! They will mean a lot more. Also, no candy or food items can be attached to the valentines. xoxoxo

This week our mini lessons were on choosing the right books! We are enjoying spending more time reading books at our level while conferring with Miss Root and Mrs. Grant.

During our shared reading, we reviewed sequence by listening to the Eric Carle story, Roosters Off To See the World. This led into a little author study and comparing and contrasting many Eric Carle stories. We read many books, discovered that he LOVES to write about animals, and created some art activities to go with some books.

## Math Workshop

We started our addition unit this week! We learned many different ways to come up with math sentences, the math signs needed to make an addition sentence, and discovered that math and joining numbers are all around us. The students acted out math stories using a playground work mat with a friend and will be making addition stories for our bulletin board next week. Here are some pictures of our math tubs since we don't have work coming home from this time!

K.OA.1 Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from.

## Writers Workshop

We finished our friend books this week and celebrated by sharing our books with our friends in small groups. The books will stay at school for a while so we can read about each other. Some cool parts of our friend books are table of contents, dedications, and fast facts. We enjoyed looking at biographies and notice the bright and colorful facts throughout the books! We collected our fast facts on post-its and then adding to empty pages. Check out the pictures!

K.W.2 Using the combination of drawing, writing, dictating, and writing to compose informative/explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic

K.W.8 With guidance and support, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.

## Science

We finished our science unit on matter and changing of matter. The students learned about changing matter and observing how the properties change. We made the cutest dogs by manipulating a piece of paper! I hope they made it home for you to see. :) We will take the matter text next week.
