Learning Through Serving (Dec. 7 - 14)
-Martin Luther King Jr.
This week I ventured up to Traverse City and took in the Annual MEMSPA conference. During the opening keynote my friend, Joe Sanfelippo shared something that immediately made my mind reflect on a conversation from earlier this year.
One of Joe's messages was...
You Will Be Remembered...
The Question is...
How?
In that moment my mind got sidetracked. I paused. And then I found my brain reflecting on a conversation with a former student at Bright Walls.
As I took in the amazing artwork I stumbled into one of my former 5th grade students, Jena. As I stepped back I noticed she was an organizer of the Bright Walls event. I asked her how she was and she shared the work she is doing for Ella Sharp Park and Bright Walls. I felt a surge of pride for my former student. Then Jena shared a memory of how we (our class) served the community during her 5th grade year. She went on to share other ways teachers got students involved in community projects through serving.
Almost twenty years has gone by and it's a reminder to us all that YOU will be remembered. The real question is, how?
Over the years I've watched Mrs. Shearer consistently involve her classroom in Service Learning projects. I've watched Mrs. Gibbs connect her class with the Retirement Home. I've been there to see Mrs. Archer work with the knitting ladies from SAFMC.
We never know when a project, an interaction, an experience might just change the path of one of our kids. I hope you will entertain ways of getting your students involved in serving others. Maybe down the road they'll be telling others about the time...
