District receives funding for program targeting specialized help for at-risk high school students
The Snohomish School District was recently notified that it has been awarded an annual grant from Snohomish County to hire two Student Support Advocates (SSAs) for the 2020-2021 school year. These two advocates serve students at the district’s two comprehensive high schools (Glacier Peak High School and Snohomish High School). This grant funded position was offered by Snohomish County Behavioral Health Services. The SSA is a direct-service position that works with students and families who are dealing with complex issues related to substance abuse, mental health, homelessness, health concerns, and lack of basic needs. They collaborate with high school staff, families, and community service providers to identify and understand issues impacting a student's performance at school. The goal of an SSA is to help students and families develop strategies to overcome barriers to learning and attending school.
Acting as a case manager, the SSAs come alongside students and families to connect them with resources external to the school district, including food banks, mental health counseling, housing, medical insurance, clinics, legal resources, and more. They also operate within the K-12 system to support student access to free and reduced lunch, assistance with sports, activity, and class fees, holiday resources, and school supplies. The SSAs support and advocacy for students and families is designed to orchestrate meaningful, positive and sustainable academic and social supports.

Protect yourself from the flu
Like COVID-19, the flu is a serious - sometimes deadly - respiratory illness. Getting a flu shot is our best protection against the flu. Get a flu shot at a pharmacy or clinic near you. Visit the HealthMap Vaccine Finder for locations.
What you need to know about the flu.
The flu is more than just a bad cold; it's a serious respiratory illness. Each year, the flu kills hundreds of people in Washington and sends thousands more to the hospital.
Anyone can get sick with the flu. They can suffer with fever, cough, sore throat and body aches for several days. Some people are at high risk for severe illness:
- Children under age 5 (especially under age 2).
- Adults 65 or older.
- Pregnant.
- Living with a health condition like asthma, diabetes or heart disease.
The best way to prevent flu is to get flu vaccine. It protects you and those around you.
Good health practices help stop flu.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water.
- Cough or sneeze into your elbow or a tissue.
- Stay home when you’re sick and call a healthcare provider.
Flu signs and symptoms
- Fever over 100.4°F or feeling feverish/chills.
- Cough.
- Sore throat.
- Runny or stuffy nose.
- Muscle or body aches.
- Headaches.
- Vomiting or diarrhea (sometimes).
Flu treatment
You can treat the flu with medicine if you get to the doctor early. The medications work best when you begin treatment within 48 hours of flu onset. Treatment can ease symptoms and reduce the risk of complications and death.
Ask your doctor for treatment options for anyone who is two weeks old or older.
Prevention
The single best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu vaccine. Everyone six months and older needs a flu vaccine each year. You can get a flu vaccine at your doctor's office or local pharmacy. To find a flu vaccine provider near you, visit the HealthMap Vaccine Finder.
When to get vaccinated
It is best to get vaccine before flu starts circulating (late summer/early fall). It is not too late to get a flu vaccine later in the season.
Stata immunization requirements
Beginning August 1, 2020:
- Every student enrolled/registered in school or child care in the state of Washington must have medically verified immunization records on file with the school in which they are enrolled/registering. Medically verified immunization records include one or more of the following:
- A Certificate of Immunization Status (CIS) printed from the Immunization Information System (IIS)
- A physical copy of the CIS form with a healthcare provider signature
- A physical copy of the CIS form with accompanying medical immunization records from a healthcare provider verified and signed by school staff
- A CIS printed from MyIR
- The update to Chapter 246-105 WAC has three major focuses:
- It now requires medically verified immunization records for school and child care entry.
- It clarifies conditional status in regards to school and child care immunization requirements and implementation.
