Amana 5th grade Newsletter
Ms. Hess & Ms. Powell-Littler 4/21/17
Class News 4 - 21 - 17
Fifth graders had the opportunity to show what they know on the Iowa Assessments this week. They worked diligently to do their personal best throughout the week to help us identify how we can grow as a school. We discussed that NO test can measure their intellect, creativity, athleticism, and personal light they shine into the world. Please reiterate that message at home as well!
To keep momentum and engagement high, we watched fascinating videos featuring traits about which we care deeply (perseverance, problem solving, cooperation, communication, creativity). Ask your child to share their favorite with you! Fifth graders also played minute to win it games that created broad smiles and boisterous laughter!
In science, we modeled day and night with Earth models discovering that rotation is ~24 hours, resulting in day and night, and revolution is a year (~365 days). When given the data that the sun rises 3 hours earlier in Washington D.C. than in California, fifth graders were able to deduce the direction of rotation of the earth using a lamp and a model of the earth as models.
Next week, we will get back to our normal schedule with the addition of a special activity on Thursday. Read more below for all the details!
Products and Processes - Thursday, April 27
Clear Creek Elementary students from Oxford will be joining us for the event. In an effort to build connection with other Clipper fifth graders, we will be partnering Amana fifth graders with CCE fifth graders. Each school has written introductory letters in advance of this gathering.
We will also eat lunch together and enjoy the wonderful Amana pool! Hooray! Please send in swim suits, towels, and a plastic bags for wet articles. Thanks!
Ms. Powell-Littler's Last Day - May 5th! Help needed!
In an effort to create a class book for Ms. Powell-Littler, I require a bit of your help. Please ask your child if they'd be interested in creating a letter, drawing, or poem in honor of her time here with us in fifth grade. She has made such an impact on your child, and I'd love to send her off with our gratitude. These would need to be completed at home in order to keep it a surprise for her last day. Letters, poems, drawings would need to turned in to me by Wednesday, May 3rd in order for me to put them together for her.
Many thanks,
Ms. Hess
