First Grade News

Mrs. Baker, Room 22

Highlights from Week 6, Oct. 5-Oct. 8

It was another great week in Room 22!

Our learning targets are changing daily as the kids continue to grow as readers, writers and mathematicians. :) During our Authors' Circle, students are sharing their personal narratives, and we can hear so many great details. Next week, we will continue to focus on personal narratives, and use Elephant and Piggie books to find inspiration. Our reading groups are going well, with all students making great progress. In math next week, we will continue to explore what we already know about subtraction, and apply those concepts to story problems. For science, our study will move to evaporation.

We started Reading Buddies this week with Mrs. Davis' 4th graders. The kids enjoyed getting to know their buddies, and we look forward to seeing them again in two weeks.

With the help of Daisy, our new Top Dog will be selected on Monday!

Check out our classroom updates, and as always, be sure to contact me with any questions. Hope you're enjoying some family time this weekend.

PE Shoes

The rainy days are coming....however, hopefully not too soon!! If you haven't already, please bring in PE shoes for you child. We don’t want to bring wet/muddy shoes on to our gym floor, and our PE class is right after recess.

This week we continued our work with reading groups. Students were assessed, and they are all making great progress. Throughout the year, we will continue to monitor student progress. Their reading group may change, to meet their needs as a reader.

We learned about vowel teams this week, and we are using this song as our transition back to the carpet during Daily 5 reading. It helps us remember that, "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking."

Next week, we will continue our work with Listen to Reading as our newest Daily 5 Choice.

Field Trip

Our field trip to the Elephant and Piggie play is scheduled for October 20th. We leave at 11 and return around 1:30. Our parent chaperones are Dana Johnson, Rhonda Birchard, Kim Kammeijer, Cecilia Robertson and Gwen Neale. Chaperones, please plan to arrive at school by 10:40 to get your group assignments and help with last minute needs.

Oak Creek is recognized as an Oregon Green School. We take pride in our efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle. Our school lunches have improved to reduce the amount of waste. Hot lunch kids now use silverware and plastic trays that are washed and reused. We have also eliminated the use of straws. The Oak Creek sustainability team would like to extend an invitation for cold lunch kids to reduce the amount of garbage that is thrown away also. When you are packing your child’s lunch please consider using reusable containers and bags.
