How it all began...
What started the Great Depression?
In 1928 the stock market crashed. This may seem like nothing to you but it really is. I dont know how old you are but you've probley heard of the Great Depression. That stock market that crashed was the start of it.It crashed within weeks. Lots of people where mad about all the their shares that were sold.
The Economy
The economy was very very bad! Almost 100,00 people was unemployed by 1932. That makes it about 25% of the countries population without jobs. If you were a banker you are in big trouble. 11,000 banks out of 25,000 in the country were closed. Also prices went down from $48-$11. That's a lot of money! Also it was hard for farmers in the great plains. It was so dry that the crops wouldn't grow! This was called the Dust Bowl! Another thing with geography was in New York. On wall street was the center of the stock Market.
The Leaders
Herbert Hoover and Franklin Delano Roosevelt were the leaders of the country during the Great Depression. Herbert Hoover was elected president in 1928. He was the main one that leaded the country. Yet the citizens of America didn't like his choices. The voted him out of office in 1932. Then Mr. Roosevelt took his place in office.
The New Deal
This was the thing to end all other things like it. The New Deal! The main person behind it was the president Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He was the one that came up with this amazing thing. His purpose was to end all things like the Great Depression. This was so because he didn't want the country to suffer anything like this again. Once the New Deal was out it put some people back to work immediately . It changed the financial system so there wont be another Great Depression. Thank you Mr. President! You helped a lot!
