Davis Elementary Principal's News

May 24, 2016

Dear Davis Families,

It’s hard to believe we now have only six school days remaining in this school year! Over the last few weeks, we have seen many great things occur both inside and out of the classroom. Our school wide MARE study continues to keep students engaged in learning about various ocean habitats, and ultimately has transformed hallways into ocean environments, with student artwork and projects adorning the walls. Last week, we had two fun-filled days of Ocean Olympics as students enjoyed field day events- even with all the rain! The week ended with a fabulous MARE assembly, where 2nd grade students treated us to some ocean songs, then the whole school joined in for the clam dance.

We’ve had an eventful few weeks outside of Davis as well. Many students were busy the past several weekends, with some participating in sessions and presenting at the AISD Innovation Summit, others competing in a Math Pentathlon tournament, a good number representing Davis at the district Music Memory competition and several participating in the district UIL competition. Our students represented Davis well at all of these events, earning many awards and distinctions for their efforts. At the Innovation Summit, a group of Davis students pitched an idea to AISD staff for a Davis MakerSpace. These students did so well in their presentation that Davis was awarded $8000 to purchase MakerSpace materials. We look forward to making these purchases and having mobile maker carts for our students next year.

Students weren’t the only ones keeping busy outside of school. At the AISD Salute event last week, Teresa Clement, Davis Administrative Assistant, was recognized as one of three finalists for AISD Classified Staff of the Year. This event also recognized our Davis Teacher of the Year, Nicole Garry, and Teacher of Promise, Kayla Logan. Later in the week, we were honored to attend a recognition event at the Austin City Council meeting. Mayor Steve Adler read a proclamation and gave us an award for winning the Are you greener than a 5th grader? sustainability challenge, sponsored by Hispanic Austin Leadership and City of Austin Office of Sustainability.

Within the school days this week and next, there will be many events in which student learning and successes will be celebrated. Several grade levels will host their final PBL showcase of the year, with students sharing their MARE learning. Fifth grade students will be recognized at the annual 5th Grade Celebration, which includes a Talent Show. They will also be celebrated on the last day of school, with a procession at the end of the day for all of our Davis graduates. We are adding a new component to the procession this year. We have invited Davis graduates who are now high school seniors to participate in this graduation procession. These students made the Davis walk seven years ago, and they will join our 5th grade students to walk the halls of Davis one last time before moving on to post high school pursuits.

Soon we will say goodbye to some truly amazing Davis teachers. Kay Hall (4th) and Belinda Cornell (3rd) will be retiring at the end of this school year. In addition, Stacey Henson (5th) and Adriana Casarez (Latin) will be moving on to pursue other endeavors. These teachers have added so much to the Davis community through their hard work and dedication and have made a positive difference in the lives of so many children. We will miss them greatly, and wish them well as they begin their new adventures.

In looking toward next school year, we are working on placing students in classes as they transition to the next grade level. Many of you have already completed the online registration process; however, there are about one hundred students expected to return, but not registered online for next school year. If you have not done so already, please register before the end of this school year in order for your child to be placed in a class for next school year. If you need assistance with this process, our office staff will be happy to give you information by phone (414-2580) or you are welcome to use a computer in the office to register your child.

I know we are all looking forward to ending the school year on a great note. Enjoy these last few days of school, and don’t forget to have your children show their school spirit by dressing for our spirit days next week (see list below). It will be great to see you all around school in the upcoming days as parents, teachers and students celebrate the phenomenal year we have had together! I wish you all a safe and happy summer. See you at Ice-Cream Social in August!

Sincerely,

Jenny Daniels
