By: Sammy Bales
Sapphire
Sapphires are a gemstone, but the mineral that sapphire's are made of is a variety of corundum. Sapphires uses are gemstones or also the birthstone for the month of September. Although sapphires are mostly known as being the color blue, they actually come in many different colors, including clear. The hardness of a sapphire is 9 on the Moh's scale making it one of the hardest minerals known to man. The Moh's scale starts at 1 with the softest of minerals and ends with 10 being the hardest. Talc is one of the softest minerals known and is a 1 on the Moh's scale. A diamond is a 10 on the Moh's scale and is the hardest mineral known. The crystals in a sapphire are trigonal and it has strong pleochroic characteristics.
Why you should by sapphires?
Sapphires are a very valuable gemstone/mineral that can be used as birthstones or for jewelry. Sapphires come in nearly every color excluding red, in which they are called rubys. Although they come in many colors, blue is the more than likely the most desirable.
About Sam
Sam is born in June making her birthstone a pearl. Pearls formula is CaCO3. Unlike all other minerals, pearls are not found in the ground or in a cave, pearls are found inside of a living oyster. Pearls are considered a very highly valued gemstone and have been mostly worn as jewelry or in decorations for many years. Pearls also can be crushed and made into makeup, medicines, or paint.
Diamond
Diamonds are made up of carbon and their chemical equation is C. Diamonds are a completely native gemstone, meaning that it is made up of only one mineral. Diamonds are a 10 on the Moh's scale, and although a sapphire is a 9, the diamond is more than four times harder than a sapphire. Also, diamonds have an extremely high melting point of 3,820 degrees Kelvin.
Emerald
Emeralds are made up of a variety of Beryl which chemical composition is Be3 Al2 Si6 O18. Emeralds are a gemstone and also a birthstone for the month of May. Emeralds color is many shades of green, and they are a 7.5-8 on the Moh's scale. Emeralds when they are taken out of the ground are not as green as when they are gemstones, the green color is caused by small amounts of chromium and enhanced by traces of iron.
Ruby
Rubys are a red variety of corundum. The chemical equation is Al2O3. Rubys are a gemstone and also the birthstone for the month of July. Rubys come in many shades of the color red, and its hardness is 9, which is equivalent to the gemstone, sapphire. Sapphire and ruby are the same hardness because they are both different variations of corundum.
