Warriors Win 39th Annual MCIT Tournament
The 2016 Warrior Baseball squad defeated the Madison Cubs on Friday April 22nd and the South Central Rebels on Saturday April 23rd to win the 2016 edition of the Madison Courier Baseball Tournament. This is the first time since 1997 that the Warriors have won the title. Sophomore Isaiah Barber took home the tournament MVP; while teammates Caleb Beswick, Bradley Whitler, Dustin Yocum, and Alex Comb were All-Tournament Team selections. The 2 wins helped move the Warriors to a 5-7 overall record.
In the opening game, Scottsburg and Madison exchanged the lead five times on Friday, but the warriors ended up on top with a 7-6 win in seven innings over Madison. Scottsburg took the lead in the sixth inning and held on for the victory. The warriors scored on an RBI single by Dustin Yocum, scoring Isaiah Barber. Scottsburg would not relinquish the lead as Madison was unable to weather a three-run sixth inning deficit. Madison scored two runs in the sixth on two errors. Still, Madison couldn't catch Scottsburg. Alex Combs recorded the win for the Warriors even though he allowed six runs over six innings. He struck out five, walked one and surrendered seven hits.
In the championship game on Saturday, Scottsburg and South Central each put runners in scoring position on Saturday, but the Warriors capitalized on more RBI opportunities, pulling out a 7-5 win at Madison. South Central had seven hits compared with Scottsburg’s six, but South Central stranded five runners on base. The Warriors staved off South Central as the Rebels were unable to match Scottsburg down the stretch. The Rebels scored on a groundout by Austin Schoen in the sixth inning and a sacrifice fly by James Richter, an error, and a groundout by Schoen in the seventh inning. Still, South Central couldn't draw even. Isaiah Barber got the win for Scottsburg. He allowed two runs over six innings. Barber struck out six, walked none and gave up five hits. The Warriors stayed on top until the final out after taking the lead in the first, scoring two runs on two singles. South Central scored one run in the first inning, and then followed it up with one more in the sixth. In the first, South Central scored on a wild pitch, scoring Cory Ray. Scottsburg increased its lead with two runs in the third. A passed ball scored Dustin Yocum to start the scoring in the inning. The Warriors piled on three more runs in the top of the sixth. A single by Caleb Beswick ignited the offense,, scoring Isaiah Walker and Lucas Brown. That was followed up by Casey Smith's single, bringing home Beswick.
Spring Sports Banquet
The 2016 Spring Sports and MSC Sports Banquet will be held on Tuesday, June 7 in the SHS Commons, 6-8 PM. Each athlete on his/her spring sports team will provide the following:
- Baseball, girls tennis, softball - each athlete is to bring a vegetable/covered dish.
- Boys golf, boys track, girls track - each athlete is to bring a dessert dish.
The meal will begin at 6 PM. The awards program will begin about 7:00 PM.
All teams will stay in the Commons during the awards presentation. Out of respect for other athletes on the other teams, please wait to leave until the end of the banquet.
NO SCHOOL ON ELECTION DAY - MAY 3rd
The last day of school for students is Thursday, May 26th.
