## ELA Objectives

Unit 6 will focus on integrating causes and effects of the Civil War with reading and writing strategies such as close reading, Facts/Questions/Response charts, and perspective writing. One main project the students are currently working on is building a model of a plantation. We have been using information they have researched and learned in class through read alouds and mini-lessons about what is contained on a plantation, what life was like, as well as who lived on a plantation. The plantation may be built using any material from home or building apps/programs. The majority of the work will be done at home and the students will be expected to bring in their completed plantations to present at school to their classmates. The due date for this project will be April 15th. However, if students would like to bring their project in sooner, that would be fantastic!

Expectations of Plantation:

-Buildings that accommodate the owners of the plantation, slave quarters, supplies, etc.

-livestock area if needed

-crops

-depict appropriate surroundings

*The students will be graded on their research notes as well as model.

## Math Objective

We are currently working on Topic 11, which involves multiplication and division of fractions. We will be testing on this topic by the end of this week and will move on to Topic 12-Volume of Solids.

*Below is a link to our Math program. Here you and your child can access the text book electronically as well as download practice pages or homework. The students can also play games at a 5th grade level or below to practice basic skills.

Your child's username is their full name followed by the last 3 digits of their lunch number (no spaces) and their password is FHSD followed by their full lunch number (no spaces).

*There are some websites below to help practice multiplying and dividing fractions.

## Spelling

We will be testing over Weeks 28 and 29.

Week 28-Latin Morpheme -spect-

Week 29 -Latin Morpheme -struct- (to build)

*Below is a link to Spelling City. Here your child can print copies of a list if it happens to get lost and use games and quizzes to practice their words for the week. You can also preview the list for the upcoming week. Spelling City will also say the words as well, if your child needs guidance pronouncing a word.

## MAP Testing

Your child should have brought home two pages on Friday, one of which indicated our testing dates and another from the district which described our state testing. Please be sure to look over these two pages carefully to understand the importance of these tests, the effort our students put forth every year, and to avoid scheduling appointments, vacations, etc. during our testing dates. Fifth grade will be testing ELA, Math, and Science. The dates are as follows:

ELA: Monday, April 18-Thursday, April 21 (Make-ups)

Math: Monday, April 25-Tuesday, April 26

Science: Thursday, April 28-Friday, April 29

We will be mainly testing in the mornings. However, if students need more time, we will extend our testing into the afternoon. Please be sure your child receives plenty of rest these days as these are tiring days for them as they challenge their thinking and skills. Also, be sure your child eats a healthy breakfast before coming to school and brings a healthy snack to give them energy later in the day.

This year, our MAP testing theme is Star Wars. So, if you would like to incorporate this into any type of motivation or positive words of encouragement from home, I am sure your child would greatly appreciate it! :)
