Things to Check...
2. Check your College Accounts! Log into those often. Things like enrollment deposits, housing information, and dates you will need to go chose your classes next year will all be coming to you soon.
3. Make sure your college application is complete! Maybe you haven't sent a transcript yet because or you haven't gone out and taken the college entrance exam. Many colleges will not schedule your registration date until these things are done.
FAFSA IRS Data Retrieval
The IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT), which allows students and parents to transfer their IRS tax information into the student's FAFSA, was taken down late last week due to security concerns.
As a reminder, students and parents could complete the 2017-18 FAFSA beginning October 1, 2016 using 2015 income tax data. Therefore, it’s likely that most seniors already completed the FAFSA using IRS Data Retrieval and should not encounter any issues due to the DRT outage.
Students and parents who have NOT completed the FAFSA should follow these steps:
- Complete the FAFSA at fafsa.gov. If they get an error message when they try IRS Data Retrieval (“page not found” or “access denied”), they should manually input their 2015 tax data.
- Request an official tax return transcript of their 2015 income data from the IRS. They will need the transcript if the college(s) they list on the FAFSA request verification of their tax data.
- Respond to verification requests as soon as possible and send all requested documents to the college. Colleges will not award financial aid until the verification process is complete.
