Congratulations, Celebrations, and Gratitudes

Congratulations to Tanya and the 2nd Graders for an amazing music program that involved singing and dancing, as well as a community dance time with parents, family and community members dancing with their 2nd graders.

Congrats to all that made beautiful paintings Saturday, April 16th at the Splatz Paint Party. Thanks to the Social Committee that arranged this social event for us.

Thanks to Brenda for stepping up and taking the long term sub job for Library Tech this spring. She is learning many things quickly and truly a support to our school.

Thanks to all teachers for getting MAPS testing done quickly and efficiently.

Thanks to those teachers who turned in their Teach-To Forms and for reviewing PAWS behavior and expectations. I truly think that students are being more successful this year with their behavior because of the time you are taking to stay on top of positive behavioral expectations. I have gift cards I will bring around this week as a reward for your efforts.

Thanks to Steve for his endurance and consistency during art. HE travels to 3 schools each week and has a different set of kids every day for six day. Then he starts over again. Thank for his willingness to travel and to make art work in each of our elementary school.

Stay Focused on Instruction - Don't Give Up

As the last 4 weeks of school are approaching, it might be tempting to take a deep breath and relax a little. Don't do it! Press forward with continued learning and the units that have been unpacked. These last 4 weeks of school might be the most important for your students, as they are leaving you for the summer and relying on the learning that they've accomplished, will last through the summer and into next fall. Try to bleed every ounce of learning time out of your schedule, even when special events and field trips are on the calendar. Don't let the calendar drive your instruction. Your students need as much learning time as possible.

It will be expected that reading, writing and math be conducted right up until the last day of school. Reading intervention and lit blocks will run right up through Wednesday, May 26th.

Collab Time - Fri, April 29

This Friday's district collab time will involve scope and sequence work and/or other priorities for 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade teachers at district admin building. All of these grades, in addition to Lit Coordinators are meeting for facilitated meetings at the admin building.

K, 1st, 5th teachers as well as PE, Music and Counselors have building collab to work on their own local priorities. Those grade levels/departments should send me an email reporting what was accomplished and how that time was used before they leave at the end of the day on Friday.

Student Engagement Survey

You should have received an email from me about a required student engagement survey that all 3rd, 4th and 5gh graders need to take between May 3 - 10. Please make arrangemetns fo rthat to occur during that window. it is a one time only, online survey that all students must take. There will not be make-ups, if students are absent on the day that your class schedules to take this survey. Please email me with the date that you will behaving your class that this engagement survey.

Testing or Special Events - Daily Schedule Interruptions

When testing or special events infringe on your daily schedule, please be sure to NOT sacrifice math, reading or writing. Please make sure that those content areas stay the main focus and should still accommodate explicit small and large group instruction every single day in reading, math and writing every single day. Sacrifices that should be made in the daily schedule when a special event or testing day occurs should include but not be limited to: social studies, science, free time, computer lab, show'n tell, extra recess, etc. Our kiddos cannot risk loosing any instructional time in those core areas. Reading block may not be sacrificed or changed without permission from the principal. A balanced approach to literacy should always be given to children everyday. If needing to rearrange the reading block to a different time due to a special event, please inform the principal and intervention staff. Please consult with Kristin, Tiffany or I if you need help in adjusting your daily schedule for a special event or guest speaker.

No Football or Football Games

We continue to have issues with students having conflict or injury while playing football. Football is not allowed to be played. 4 weeks ago, it was announced that the game may not be played formally and that students may only pass and kick the ball back and forth. For whatever reason, they seem to be playing formal and informal games of football, with modified rules. Due consistent conflict and injury, we will not longer allow footballs at recess for the next two weeks. Football or playing with footballs are excluded from any recess until May 6th . Please enforce this rule during your recess duty.

Leadership Team Master Schedule Work - Update

The leadership team met on Monday, April 25th and began to brainstorm ideas for how to more efficiently use instructional time throughout each day and throughout the next school year (2016-17). I will draft a new master schedule with some of those ideas to bring back to their next meeting on Monday, May 16th. Some of the ideas that were discussed included the following: extra plan time through extra PE & Music; not placing co-planning on fridays, doing library and 2nd step separate from the PE/Music schedule; scheduling a math block for each grade level; and other ideas.

If you have a vested interest in this topic, please come to the next leadership team meeting on Monday, May 16th at 3:45 pm. We will also draft Calendar events for the first trimester of the next school year at that meeting.

MAPS Conclusion and Make Ups

ALL students need to complete their MAPS testing no later than April 29th (this Friday). Please make sure that you check your lists and check in with Brenda to assure that students have been absent are getting the opportunity to make up their tests. Re-takes are not allowed without principal permission.
