Curriculum at the Lending Library

Orange County History Day - Natural History Day

Each year NHD frames students’ research within a historical theme. The theme is chosen for its broad application to world, national or state history and its relevance to ancient history or to the more recent past. The theme for 2020 is Breaking Barriers in History. The theme provides a focused way to increase students’ historical understanding and an opportunity to develop perspective and understanding rather than merely being able to cite facts and figures. Through participation in this program, students in grades 4-12 become amateur historians on their journey to discover the significance of their chosen historical topic.

To learn more about this unique opportunity, please visit https://ocde.us/EducationalServices/STEMandHumanities/History/Pages/History-Day.aspx

If your child is interested in participating in this year's contest, please contact Chuck Glowacz: chuck@inspireschools.org

Educational Tools

Telling Time Teaching Clock and Time Game by Owlconic

Kids learn to tell the time with this specially designed analog kids wall clock that lets them see what time it is using colored numbers. With each quarter broken down into a specific color, it’s easier than ever for kids to remember and retain where each minute is. Telling time on the timepiece is easy and fun and teaching children is a breeze thanks to helpful references like “o’clock,” “quarter past,” “half past,” and “quarter to.”

Children get all the information they need on this educational clock. For kids to learn time efficiently this design had to be easy to understand, labeling each quarter with a different color would provide an easy way for your child to quickly create an association between the numbers and where they are. Each hand is also labeled in order to avoid any possible confusion, every minute is represented on the clock, meaning children will always be able to see the exact time.

The Owlconic Time Game is also available. The game helps kids understand time using hands-on learning. Giving children the opportunity to make sense of their day, for example the times when they do daily activities in their routine. The are lots of different ways to use the 128-piece game set to play a variety of time based games. The set is fully adjustable for all learning abilities and gives kids lots of ways to explore time.

Telling Time Teaching Clock is currently available on Amazon for $24.97.

Homeschooling Advice

2 Truths to Set Your Homeschool Free

"Truth #1: You Can’t Teach Your Children Everything They Need to Know.

This is a freeing truth because it relieves you of the burden to do so. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, we tend to think there some imaginary line out there that represents the amount of information your child needs in order to succeed in the real word. This just isn’t true. There are not enough hours in the day, or days in the year to teach them everything.

There will be gaps. World history is too vast and complicated to fit neatly into your homeschool years. Even if you teach chronologically and follow the timeline perfectly, it just won’t fit. This sets us free to stop trying. Stop trying to fit it all in starting at the age of five. Because what happens in our desire to cover everything is that we end up covering a lot, but without much depth. You’ll have to stick to summaries and move on quickly if you want to cover as much as possible.

Instead, follow your children’s interests and learn about the things that are most important to you and your family. Dig deep into the well of learning because it is in those deeper waters that we often discover hidden treasure. A scope and sequence is still a helpful tool, but remember that what matters more than what you teach, is how you teach it."
