Please Welcome Campbell to the Maple Class!
Campbell Kennedy, Maple Class (Kindergarten) Co-Teacher
A lifetime love of learning and sharing guided Campbell Kennedy to the Maple Class in 2017. Originally from Washington. DC, Campbell has had a passion to teach ever since he was 5 years old and realized that Indiana Jones was a teacher. He has developed a passion for integrating the arts in all forms in his teaching style, whether it is using drawings to talk about students homes or short plays to describe addition and subtraction. He is a graduate of Adelphi University, where he attained his B.A. in History and received his M.A. in Early Childhood Education from the University of the District of Columbia.
Outside of the classroom Campbell enjoys a variety of geeky pursuits. He is also a foodie at heart and will try any meal at least once. He enjoys cooking with his wife Cristen Kennedy and playing with their cat Solomon.

Meet and Greet with Campbell, New Maple Co-Teacher
On Thursday morning, we will host a meet and greet with Campbell, our new Maple co-teacher and Compass team member. Please come to the Community Room at 8:20 for an informal question and answer session with Campbell. We are so excited for everyone to meet him. Coffee will be provided!
Volunteers Needed
We are in the process of upgrading our OT/PT Room and Guided Reading Library. We recently ordered 5 shelves from IKEA that are awaiting assembly. If you are able to come by to help, please let us know. We appreciate you!
Kindergarten Applications for 2017-2018
If you have a child who will be entering kindergarten next fall, please apply online. Applications are due by April 1st, but it helps us to know how many siblings will be attending Compass next school year. We get a lot of questions from new families applying for kindergarten and we would like to be able to share an approximate number of open seats. Siblings of currently enrolled students receive priority in admission, but only if the application is completed by April 1st. We are looking forward to more siblings joining Compass in the fall. If you have questions, please let us know.

Winter Fling Fundraiser & Silent Auction
Date: Friday. February 10th
Time: 7:00-10:30
Location: C’mon Everybody, 325 Franklin Ave, Brooklyn
This adults-only party at the fun Bed-Stuy bar C'mon Everybody features great DJs and live performances from Compass parents, tacos from local favorite Chilo's, and can't-pass-em-up auction items! It was our BIGGEST fundraiser last year, bringing in over $12,000 that went to support after school scholarships, the building of our Compass Community Closet, incredible partnerships with Mark Morris, the New Victory Theater, and Jazz at Lincoln Center, and additional art, music, and science room supplies, among other things. Plus, it was a lot of fun! Come on out, strike up a conversation with that parent you see every morning in the hallways but never have the chance to speak to, listen to some amazing music, and have a great time while supporting Compass!

Operations Updates
Department of Health staff will be on site on January 31st to do vision screenings for Kindergarten and 1st grades. You will receive a follow up letter only if your child fails the vision test.
Funds for Meals Eaten & Healthy School Fund
Please look out for emails and a letter backpacked home with updated amounts due for meals eaten at school and the Healthy School Fund (for November- December). When making electronic payment, please make sure to note your student's name and what you are paying for.
Reminder of Late Arrival Procedures
The arrival window every morning is 7:45- 8AM. Arrivals after 8AM are considered late. If you arrive between 8 and 9AM, you must sign in at the security desk and bring your child up to the 4th floor and to class. If you arrive after 9AM, please sign in at the Compass Main Office (room 431), get a late pass and bring your child and the late pass to the classroom. Signing in at the security desk/ Main Office ensures that the Main Office is able to adjust your child's official record to show that he/she was in fact present for the day.
Reminder of Early Pick Up Procedures
We understand that there will be occasions that you need to pick your child up from school early. If you need to pick your child up from school earlier than 3:45 (or 12:45 on Wednesdays), you must first sign him/her out by coming to the Compass Main Office (Room 431). Main Office staff will give you a pass to give to your child's teachers. Teachers will not release children in their room without seeing this pass!
