Owl of the Week
Congratulations to our Owl of the Week, Anna Catherine! Her nominating teacher, Mrs. Yeager, says "Anna Catherine often comes into my classroom during lunch. There is a mix of Freshmen and Sophomores who are eating and working on assignments. They often ask Anna Catherine for help or guidance. She willingly helps anyone. She does so in a non-threatening manner, often taking almost her whole lunch period to help another student."

OECHS Class Updates
English
English II Honors: This week, students have continued their novel study of The Kite Runner. In conjunction with our novel study, we completed a theme analysis, a carousel poster activity, and an analysis of characters' point of view. Students all received their graded expository essays, and after completing their essays, they participated in Writing Groups where they analyzed major errors in their writing. Next week, students will complete their Kite Runner projects, which will be presented on February 12 and 13. They will have a test on the novel on Friday, Feb. 14, and they will be introduced to their second formal essay assignments, Cultural Analyses, next week.
English IV Honors: This week students began breaking down the specific elements of rhetorical analysis for their personal essay. In addition, they used the SOAPSTone process to develop a draft of their essay introduction. As the week ends and next week begins, students will create an informal outline of their essay and then move to an initial draft. The final essay due date has not been determined. The date will be set once all students have selected all the appeals and devices to be analyzed and have completed an informal outline. Once the due date is set, students will begin working independently on the assignment.
Math
Honors Math 3: Both classes have an 89 average. The six weeks ends on February 14th. Next week students will continue Unit 2 Advanced Functions and there will be a quiz on Tuesday.
Honors Math 4: This week we will be working on Exponential and Logarithmic Functions and Equations. The beginning of the week we will be working on the Properties of Logarithms, and Solving Logarithmic Equations. On Wednesday we will have a quiz covering sections 3.1 - 3.4. The latter part of the week will be devoted to Solving Exponential Equations with Unlike Bases, and Applications of Exponentials and Logarithms.
Social Studies
Civics and Economics: This week we started our study on the process the Framers went through to write the U.S. Constitution. We looked at our first form of government- The Articles of Confederation and its weaknesses that led to the need for a new form of government. We then looked at the different compromises that were needed to satisfy opposing ideas as the Constitution was being written. Next week we will look at the arguments of the Federalists and Anti-Federalists. We will also be studying the Federalist Papers. We will take our test on Thursday of next week.
AP WH: This week we looked at the influence the Enlightenment had on social and political thought from 1750. We also looked how these ideals lead to the American and French Revolution. Next week we will continue to examine the Haitian and Latin American Revolutions as well as how nationalism influenced not only these revolutions but would lead to future problems as well.
American History Honors: This week we completed and tested Unit 2: The Jefferson Era & the War of 1812. Monday we will begin our study of one of the most colorful & controversial presidents -Andrew Jackson.
Unit 2 resources have been uploaded into Teams and students are encouraged to check daily for updates.
In preparation for college classes, students should be making a habit of reading their (Norton) textbook, watching the video clips, lectures, etc listed in Teams and as recommended by their instructor(s). Students should also be adhering to a daily study schedule in order to organize their work and avoid stress! We consistently remind students to work in “minutes” versus “hours” as much can be accomplished in 15-30 minute blocks of time!
Science
Biology Honors: This week in Honors Biology we ventured into the realm of Genetics. We studied Mendel and his famous pea plants and then moved into looking at Human Genetic Disorders. Next week we will be studying DNA and learn about the backstabbing that went on to discover the Double Helix and the arrogance of the scientific elite. We will also look at Genetic Technology.
Chemistry Honors: We are working on Unit 4. We will do the Flame Test Lab on Friday.
APES: We are starting Unit 7 (Atmosphere and Air Pollution).
