Encouraging Persistence in Math
As teachers, we need to provide students with opportunities to practice their problem-solving skills in an activity that provides a low floor and high ceiling. This allows students of all ability levels to engage while still be challenging. It is also helpful when the problem has multiples paths to the solution which also makes it accessible to all learners.
To help facilitate this process in your classroom:
- Provide an expectation that fosters trial and error
- Encourage students to think outside the box
- Focus on the process instead of just the final product
- Allow students to collaborate in pairs/small groups
At the beginning, you may need to facilitate and prompt:
- Ask leading questions to help them get started
- Answer their question with another question prompting them to think about which process to explore
- If students finish early, ask them if there is another way to solve

Learning Slope via Rate not Rote
Oct 3, 2019 - Webinar
The concept of slope is a mystery to many students. Building a foundation for understanding slope begins with establishing concrete knowledge of rates, ratios, proportional relationships, and similarity. By introducing slope as a rate, particularly a unit rate, the real meaning and relevance of slope emerge. This session examines these foundations to deepen participants’ understanding of slope and empowers them to support a coherent transition from middle school to high school mathematics.
