Longfellow Elementary
Notes from Mrs. Heckenlaible...
Happy Spring to you all!
I look forward to celebrating all of our staff next week! May 2-6 is Teacher Appreciation Week across the nation and what better time to show our teachers how much we truly cherish everything they have done and continue to do to prepare our Lions for their future! I am so proud of our staff and all they have accomplished to make this year the best it could be!
Our third through fifth grade Lions took the South Dakota Smarter Balanced Assessment during the month of April. They persisted and persevered and we are so proud of them for their dedication to hard work and giving it their best effort. Way to represent Longfellow!!!
Thank you to all the families that participated and had fun with the Longfellow Family Fitness challenges this year. It was great to see families connect and see them enjoying activities to promote positive health and family time.
Thank you for a wonderful year! We appreciate all the support our families provided so that we could have the best year possible. Have a sensational and safe summer and I look forward to seeing you and working with you all in the 2022-2023 school year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Heckenlaible

Teacher/Principal Appreciation
Principal Appreciation Day is May 1st: Mrs. Heckenlaible is usually the first person in the building and the last one to leave. She knows each of the students and calls them by name. Mrs. H has high expectations for the students and staff of Longfellow. Why? Because we are not just educating children, we are helping raise future adults. No one appreciates a thank you note more than Mrs. Heckenlaible!
Local Rockstars!!!
I couldn't be more proud of the dedication that each of you give to your Longfellow Lions and the education, love, and support that you provide each and every day! a BIG SHOUTOUT to all the staff at Longfellow Elementary! I am so THANKFUL for you!!!

Thank you for participating in the Fitness Challenge!!!
We have had great success with our fitness challenge this year! We were able to give out a total of 100 prizes!!! The students learned so much about all of the fitness components. They also know what activities to do that can help them improve in each area. Thanks so much for participating and sending in your pictures each month. It has been a joy to see them all!
The Fitness Challenge is over, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to stop being active. Live a healthy lifestyle, be active, and have fun!

Habits of Mind
Managing Impulsivity - This can be a challenging one for students and adults alike. Give yourself tools to control your impulsivity. Ask yourself, "Is what I want to say helpful or necessary? Can it wait or MUST it be said right now? Does my response match the situation?" Being excited or angry is ok. Those are feelings we are all allowed to have. However, screaming "I WAS SITTING THERE FIRST!!!" does not match the situation. You can politely ask the person to move and then tell an adult if needed. Although we might like to interrupt the teacher first thing in the morning to tell her about Grandma visiting tomorrow, there is a correct time for that.
Both of these habits are integral to becoming a productive and successful adult. We won't always get it right, even as adults. However, as long as we are aware and trying to follow these habits, we'll be on the path to success.
