Spotlight on Arts Education
Dance Academy ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Lena Lagos - BBCHS Class of 2009
For the past fifteen+ years, Lena has been inspiring the lives of dancers of all ages. Lena discovered her passion for dance at a young age. At ten, her brother introduced her to the world of Latin dance by taking her to her very first dance class at Latin Beat Dance Studios. From that moment, she knew dance would dominate her life. AND IT DID! In middle school, she joined the cheer-leading squad and was introduced to basic dance combinations as well as gymnastic techniques. She continued cultivating her craft through Boynton Beach Community high school, and her determination awarded her a full scholarship at the Southern Dance Theatre. Eventually, Lena was asked to join the Dancer Edge Company where she danced for two years. These opportunities broadened her dance vocabulary and technique; only giving her a small glimpse into what the future had in store for her.
Lena has trained in ballet, modern, jazz, Horton, salsa, and contemporary dance. She disciplined her ballet technique at Ballet Florida, then ventured to New York City to train at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater as well as the Martha Graham School of Modern Dance. Her hard work and dedication landed her performance opportunities with the Peter London Global Dance Company. In May of 2014, Lena received her Associates of Arts degree, from New World School of the Arts.
Lena currently conducts numerous national Latin dance workshops, and holds the position of Director of Dance at Plumosa School of the Arts. Lena, an alumni of the Southern Dance Theater, returns to her dance roots to inspire new generations of dancers. In this ever changing world, her mission is to instill a love for dance to all her students. She is patient and determined to motivate students of all ages that display interest and passion to study the craft. Her choreography combines elements of classical dance technique with contemporary styles of dance and a splash of Latin flavor. She aims to cultivate each student with the history of the arts through movement; improving the student’s knowledge and understanding of dance and its role in the world. Her immediate goal is to create a safe environment for her students to explore and discover the beauty of movement.
Her are samples of her work:
